Installing Drive Shaft
- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
Replace circlip on the drive shaft and shaft sealing ring in the final drive
> Refer to the appropriate service information
Make sure no: to damage the sealing ring when guiding the drive shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shaft must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage.
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- Visually check that " the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential.
Dimension 1 - centre of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown)
Information
- All screws and threaded joints on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Measurement -1-
from the lower edge of the wing to the middle of the vehicle axle corresponds to vehicle position. The current height values can be found in
> 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT
Always observe the following points!
- On vehicles with air springs, the respective air spring must be bled using the Porsche System Tester.
- Screws and nuts are Geomet-coated and must not be greased.
Information
The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.
- Grease the splines with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1-
into the wheel bearing housing -2-
(-A-
). When doing this, press the inner joint together fully.
Inserting drive shaft into wheel bearing housing
Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)
Information
- Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 - fitting tool .
- Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
- Grease mounting-face ring of axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Fit the axle nut.
- After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
Pulling in drive shaft
- 4.1
Tighten the drive shaft, in the 1st step "before installation" to > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
--.
To do this, place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage the brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. A second mechanic is required! -arrow-
- 4.2 The second tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the section on "Subsequent work".
- 4.1
Tighten the drive shaft, in the 1st step "before installation" to > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
--.
- Left side: Replace the plastic protective ring on the transmission side, which you broke off during removal.
- Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle differential and a new protective ring and circle/ip on the drive shaft.
- Fit the wheel bearing housing (second mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear axle differential housing with a quick, strong tap.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel carrier slightly with a universal jack! Use a rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! > Lifting wheel bearing housing (example)
