Installing Drive Shaft
- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
Replace circlip on the drive shaft and shaft sealing ring in the final drive
> 392219 Removing and installing sealing ring for output flange.
Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the drive shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shaft must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage.
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- Visually check that the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential.
Information
Dimension X - lower edge of wing to centre of axle (shown as an example)
- All screws and bolts on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -X- , from lower edge of wing to centre of axle corresponds to vehicle position. For the current height values, please refer to the adjustment values for suspension alignment
- Visually inspect all parts.
- Replace self-locking nuts.
- Replace all expansion screws (screws fitted using torque angle tightening procedure).
- Use correct tightening torques and torque angle.
Information
The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.
- Grease the toothing with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1-
into the wheel bearing housing -2-
(-A-
). When doing this, press the inner joint together tightly.

Information
Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)
- Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 - fitting tool.
- Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
- Grease the mounting-face ring of the axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Screw on the axle nut.
- After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
Pulling in drive shaft (shown as an example)
- 4.1 Draw the drive shaft into the wheel hub in step 1, "before installing the wheel bearing housing" with > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
. To do this, place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage the brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. 2. mechanic is required! -arrow-
Then, tighten the drive shaft, "fitted in the vehicle", in the 2nd step to the prescribed tightening torque!
- 4.2 The second tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the section on
"Subsequent work"! Observe the correct tightening torque.
- 4.1 Draw the drive shaft into the wheel hub in step 1, "before installing the wheel bearing housing" with > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)

- Left side: Replace the plastic protective ring on the transmission side, which you broke off during removal.
- Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
- Fit the wheel bearing housing (second mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear axle differential housing with a quick, strong tap.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel carrier slightly with a universal jack! Use a rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! > Tie rod assembly aid (shown as an example)
