Removing Chain Housing Cover

Information 

• The number of screws, fastening clips, plug connections, holders and lines may vary depending on the engine variant and equipment. 
• The graphics for removal or installation are partly shown on a variant and may deviate from the actual situation. 
• Naturally, some steps must always be carried out. 
• Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. 

1. Remove deflection rollers -1, 4-  and belt tensioner damper -2-  .
   1. 1.1 Lever off the deflection roller covers.
   2. 1.2 Unscrew the -3-  belt tensioner damper and the deflection roller screws.
   3. 1.3 Remove belt tensioner damper and deflection rollers.

2. Remove coolant hoses/lines -Blue-  , positive crankcase ventilation lines -Green-  and vacuum hoses -Orange-  .

3. Loosen cable duct -1-  on the chain housing cover and expose wiring harness.
   1. 3.1 Unplug the electric plug connection of the oil pressure control valve and oil level sensor and unclip the cable in the area of the oil guide housing and oil pan.
   2. 3.2 Unscrew screw -2-  , swivel cable duct -1-  upwards and secure with a tie-wrap.

4. Disconnect lines -2-  on the chain housing cover.
   1. 4.1 Unscrew screw -1-  and remove.

      Replace screw during installation.

5. Loosen screws securing chain housing cover to oil guide housing.
   1. 5.1 Unscrew screws -1-  and remove.

6. Removing chain housing cover.
   1. 6.1 Remove screws in the sequence -30 to 1-  .

      Replace screws during installation.

      Information 

      Increased loosening forces can occur due to the large-area bonding. Loosen chain housing cover by tapping it carefully with a plastic hammer if necessary.

   2. 6.2 Loosen and remove the chain housing cover.

7. Secure the control chain -1-  and tension rail -2-  with a cord -Arrow-  .

8. Degrease control chain and crankshaft at one point and -1-  apply a marking using a water-resistant pen.

   The feather key -Arrow- must be at 1 o'clock position in TDC position.
