Information 

Before starting work, observe the Technical Information

> SY, 1533 ENGINE SYMPTOM - LOOSE/BROKEN SCREWS AND OIL LEAKS IN THE AREA OF THE CHAIN HOUSING COVER AND/OR CAMSHAFT PHASER (SY 210/21) 

Information 

For optimum assembly, turn the engine to "TDC" before disassembly.

Information 

Seal open lines and hoses with suitable sealing plugs from the > VAS 6122 - motor sealing plug set.

Information 

• The number of screws, fastening clips, plug connections, holders and lines may vary depending on the engine variant and equipment. 
• The graphics for removal or installation are partly shown on a variant and may deviate from the actual situation. 
• Naturally, some steps must always be carried out. 
• Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. 

1. Disconnect the battery.

   > WM 978509 LOOSENING AND SECURING GROUND STRAP FOR BATTERY

2. Drain engine oil.

   > 170117 CHANGING ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER

3. Drain coolant.

   > 193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT (INCLUDES BLEEDING)

4. Remove refrigerant by suction.

   > WM 870317 DRAINING AND FILLING REFRIGERANT (CAYENNE, CAYENNE GTS, CAYENNE TURBO S, CAYENNE S, CAYENNE S E-HYBRID, CAYENNE TURBO, CAYENNE S DIESEL, CAYENNE (3.0))

5. Removing both air cleaner housings.

   > 242519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CLEANER HOUSING

6. Remove front bumper.

   >WM 631519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT APRON (EXCEPT CAYENNE, CAYENNE GTS, CAYENNE TURBO S, CAYENNE S, CAYENNE S E-HYBRID, CAYENNE TURBO, CAYENNE S DIESEL, CAYENNE (3.0)) .

7. Completely dismantle the lock support panel and bumper with all radiators.

   1. 7.1 Loosen -1-  screw and pull ATF lines -3-  off -4-  the thermostat.

      1. 7.1.1 Collect leaking ATF and close lines with suitable plugs.
   2. 7.2 To do this, remove -4-  screws for the refrigerant line on the condenser -5-  . Disconnect refrigerant lines and close them off so that they are air-tight.

      Replace O-rings during installation.

   3. 7.3 Disconnect the hydraulic lines to the power steering radiator in the area of the left-hand side member.

      1. 7.3.1 Loosen clamps -1-  and pull off hoses -2-  .
      2. 7.3.2 Collect leaking hydraulic oil and close hoses with suitable plugs.
   4. 7.4 Disconnect electric plug connections.
      1. 7.4.1 Unlock and disconnect electric plug connection -6-  for the wiring harness on the left side.

   5. 7.5 Unlock and disconnect electric plug connection -8-  on the right side.

   6. 7.6 Disconnect the flap cable separating clutch from the longitudinal member at the top left.

   7. 7.7 Unscrew the screws -5-  to the side member.

   8. 7.8 Unscrew screws -4-  from bumper.

   9. 7.9 Remove complete radiator assembly with the help of another person.
8. Remove the cover for the throttle body completely with both moulded hoses.

   > WM, 243519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COWL FOR THROTTLE HOUSING (Y-PIPE)

9. Loosen three fastening screws -Arrows-  on the coolant pump belt pulley.

10. Remove drive belt.

    > WM, 137819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVE BELT

11. Remove the coolant pump belt pulley.
12. Remove both cylinder head covers.

    > WM, 158219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD COVER 

13. Turn engine to TDC of cylinder 1.
14. Remove belt pulley.

    > WM, 137619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING VIBRATION DAMPER (CRANKSHAFT PULLEY)

    1. 14.1 Before removing the belt pulley, make sure that the stakeout hole of the belt pulley is aligned with the recess in the chain housing cover.
    2. 14.2 Remove belt pulley with friction plate.
15. Fit > 9678/1 - staking tool on the camshafts of both cylinder banks and fit screws by hand.

16. Remove joint flange for crankshaft sealing ring.

    1. 16.1 Replace sealing flange during installation.
17. Remove turbocharger suction and pressure hose on cylinder bank 1.
18. Remove generator.

    > 272219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING GENERATOR

19. Remove chain tensioner.

    > WM, 153619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CHAIN TENSIONER .

20. Remove oil pressure indicator with adapter.

    >WM, 170419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL-PRESSURE SENDER .
