Installing Crankshaft Sealing Ring

CAUTION: Ingress of dirt
  • Danger of material damage due to blocked oil bores/oil ducts.

→ Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the engine.

→ Lay removed engine parts on a clean base and make sure to cover them.

→ Use the cover for dust protection when fitting the engine NR.165  on the engine assembly support.

WARNING: Caustic fluids
  • Danger of chemical burns

→ Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Ensure that there is good ventilation.

→ If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

  1. If any small edges or burrs are found on the chamfer of the crankshaft flange, carefully remove them with an oilstone. Then, carefully clean the crankshaft journal and crankcase bore (using solvent naphtha or acetone and a clean lint-free cloth).
CAUTION: Corrosion at the crankshaft flange.
    • Leaks.

→ Never use an abrasive or polishing cloth or brushes with metal bristles on the sealing surface of the crankshaft flange.

→ Only use a special metal-polishing pad to remove corrosion on the crankshaft flange.

→ Clean crankshaft flange carefully using acetone or solvent naphtha.

  2. Remove corrosion on the crankshaft flange with a special metal-polishing pad (for example, Nevr Dull, available in car and motor bike accessory stores). Then clean the flange carefully (using solvent naphtha or acetone).
    1. 2.1. Allow components to dry off sufficiently.

    Information

    A 1.7-mm thick aluminum support ring is also fitted ex-works as of engine numbers M97.76 618 24165 - GT3  and M97.76 618 29011 - GT3 RS  .

    • The support ring is fitted behind the crankshaft sealing ring  .
    • The support ring must always be replaced.
    • For more information, see: Technical Information 3/08, spacer ring for crankshaft sealing ring.
  3. Fit the support ring -1-  .

NOTE: Incorrect handling of sealing rings and covers
    • Leaks
    • Risk of damage to components

→ Use clean tools without burrs.

→ Make sure not to leave any scores or scratches when cleaning.

  4. Secure the base plate of the insertion tool 9719  to the crankshaft flange evenly and only until it is hand-tight using the hexagon socket head bolts -Figure-  .

    NOTE: Incorrectly fitted sealing ring
    • Damage to micro-sealing lip
    • Leaks

→ Only fit the crankshaft sealing ring dry.

→ Never touch the micro sealing lip.

    Information

    • Because of the vacuum conditions in the GT3 crankcase, the sealing ring is fitted "the other way round" unlike the other Porsche units.
    • Make sure that the steel ring is facing the observer during installation.
  5. Place the magnetic cone of the insertion tool 9719  on the base plate. Position crankshaft sealing ring on the cone and push it carefully onto the base plate.

The steel ring must be facing the observer during assembly.

    1. 5.1. Fit the sealing ring dry.

  8. Pull the crankshaft sealing ring onto the crankshaft flange by turning the tightening nut clockwise until the mounting bell is fully touching the contact surface of the crankcase.
    1. 8.1. Leave assembly tool in the end position for one to two minutes. This positions the sealing ring and the sealing lip.

  9. Loosen the tightening nut and unscrew the hexagon-head bolt of the insertion tool. Remove tool and screw off ground plate.
  10. Check installation position of sealing ring.
    1. 10.1. To do this, use a calliper gauge to take measurements at four points from the crankcase flange to the flat part of the steel ring -arrows-  .

Measured depth is approx. 5 mm.

The maximum permissible inclined position is 0.5 mm.
