Disassembling Crankshaft

NOTE: Dirt and contamination
  • Risk of damage to units or components

→ Protect components from dirt and contamination.

→ Clean or replace dirty components.

6 Timing gear 1 Check toothing for wear, remove if necessary Note reference number, paired with intermediate shaft, only install together, heat on a heating plate, push on as far as it will go. The collar of the timing gear must point to bearing 7
7 Main bearing shells for bearings 2-7 12   Replace
8 Sputter bearings 6   Only fitted on rod side, two retaining lugs, replace bearings
9 Connecting rod 6   Note installation position, weight and matching number assigned to connecting rod cap
10 Connecting rod bolt, M10 x 1.25 12   Replace screws, observe tightening specifications
11 Thrust bearings 2   Replace
12 Roll pin, 6.0 x 16 1   Replace if necessary
13 Radial shaft seal 1   Replace, observe fitting instructions
14 Crankshaft 1 Clean carefully and visually inspect for damage.  
15 Smooth bearings 6   One retaining lug, replace
16 Connecting rod cap 6   Note matching number for connecting rod
17 Woodruff key 1   Check that it is seated correctly, replace
  1. Pull off roll pin (6 x 16) on crankshaft flange (flywheel side) using a vice-grip wrench.
  2. Secure special tool retainer plate P209a -2-  on the crankshaft flange (flywheel side) with three cheese head bolts -1-  (e.g. Part No. 928.102.151.01).
    1. 2.1. Clamp crankshaft in a vice using the retainer plate.

  3. Unscrew connecting rod bolts (M10 x 1.25) using a socket-wrench insert.

    → WM 1344IN MOUNTING SPECIFICATION FOR CONNECTING ROD BOLTS - GT3/GT3 RS  .

    1. 3.1. Take off connecting rod and connecting rod cap.
    2. 3.2. Replace connecting rod bolts. 
  4. Remove connecting-rod bearing shells.
    1. 4.1. Replace bearing shells. 
  5. Remove circlip using commercially available circlip pliers.

  6. Remove intermediate ring and timing gear using a conventional puller.
  7. Lift up Woodruff key using side cutters and remove it.
  8. Remove crankshaft from the retainer plate and clean it carefully (with solvent naphtha, e.g. Meta Clean 366).
  9. Rinse out lubrication bores on the crankshaft several times with solvent naphtha and blow out with compressed air.
  10. Check bearings on the crankshaft (main bearings and connecting-rod bearings) for signs of damage and wear.
    1. 10.1. There must be no obvious scoring or (blue) discoloration.
