Removing and installing rear spring strut: Removal

  1. Raise vehicle, remove rear wheel.
  2. Loosen stabilizer mount at stabilizer (counter with open-ended wrench).
  3. Undo the drive shaft on the transmission. Slide a protective hose over the drive shaft in order to avoid damage to the drive shaft.
  4. Loosen toe control arm and control arm at wheel carriers and press off the ball joints with special tool 9560. When loosening fastening nuts, counter with special tool 9546 (Torx screwdriver) at the ball-joint pins.

    NOTE:
    • In order to pull the ball joint journal out of the wheel carrier, evenly pull down the control arm with both hands while swinging the wheel carrier outward. Enlist the assistance of a second person for this step.
  5. Disconnect plug connection at wheel carriers and pull out the plugs. Undo plug connection at wheel carrier and unclip the electrical wires at the spring strut.
  6. Loosen holder for brake line/brake hose at wheel carrier. Loosen brake caliper from wheel carrier and attach in wheel arch.

  7. Remove the corresponding parking brake cable on the turnbuckle of the parking brake lever. To do this:
    • Undo lock nut and adjusting nut (No. 1) from the pull rod (No. 2) and unscrew them completely.
    • Disengage the tab washer (No. 3) for the parking brake cables from the tab (No. 4) - on the upper and lower sides.
    • Disengage the corresponding parking brake cable and pull it downward out of the guide.

  8. Undo lock nuts M8 (3 ea.) of the spring strut mount. Before doing this, mark the installed position of the spring strut mount (position of the three collar nuts). Pull out spring strut with wheel carrier.
    NOTE:
    • Make sure that the ball joint boots and drive shaft boots are not damaged during removal and installation.

    Also make sure that back-up ring No. 5 is not shifted out of its correct position during removal and installation. The back up ring is correctly positioned if the three cut-outs of back-up ring No. 5 are positioned between the collars of the fastening bolts on the spring strut mount.

  9. Loosen clamped connection between spring strut/wheel carrier (ball joint of stabilizer mount). Counter with open-ended wrench. Pull out spring strut from wheel carrier.
