Diagnosis/troubleshooting for vehicles with Tiptronic transmission

NOTE: Before troubleshooting, read out the fault memory of the DME, Tiptronic and the instrument cluster and, if necessary, remedy faults!
DIAGNOSIS TROUBLESHOOTING - FAULT CODE 5520, AS OF MY 2002 (TIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION)

1 Visual inspection
  • Visual inspection of all plug contacts and leads
Step 2 Repair wiring harness
-> End
2 Check control units
  • Ignition off
  • Disconnect plug from DME control module D and instrument cluster A
  • Ignition on
  • Erase fault memory
  • Update and read out fault memory
No display Fault code 5520
Step 6
Display Fault code 5520 present
Step 3
3 Check CAN drive between ABS control unit, DME control module and instrument cluster for short circuit to B+
  • Ignition off
  • Pull plug off the ABS control unit
  • Ignition on
  • Measure voltage between ABS control unit plug pin 24 and ground
  • Measure voltage between ABS control unit plug pin 40 and ground
< 0.3 V
Step 4
Short circuit to B+
Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
4 Check CAN drive between ABS control unit, DME control module and instrument cluster for short circuit to ground
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 24 and ground
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 40 and ground
Step 5 Short circuit to ground
Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
5 Check CAN drive between ABS control unit, instrument cluster and DME control module for short circuit with respect to each other
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between PSM control unit plug pin 24 and pin 40
Step 15 Short circuit with respect to each other Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
6 Check CAN drive between ABS control unit and DME control module for open circuit or incorrect allocation
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 24 and DME control module plug D pin 36 (CAN drive high)
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 40 and DME control module plug D pin 37 (CAN drive low)

Repair open circuit in CAN wiring harness
-> End
7 Check CAN drive between ABS control unit and instrument cluster for open circuit or incorrect allocation
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 24 and instrument cluster plug A pin 15 (CAN drive high)
  • Measure resistance between ABS control unit plug pin 40 and instrument cluster plug A pin 31 (CAN drive low)

Step 8
Repair open circuit in CAN wiring harness
-> End
8 Check DME control module
  • Ignition off
  • Connect plug to ABS control unit
  • Connect plug D to DME control module
  • Ignition on
  • Erase fault memory
  • Update and read out fault memory
No display Fault code 5520
Step 9
Display Fault code 5520 present
Step 11 and also continue test at
Step 9
9 Check instrument cluster
  • Ignition off
  • Connect plug to ABS control unit
  • Connect plug A to instrument cluster
  • Disconnect plug D from DME control module
  • Ignition on
  • Erase fault memory
  • Update and read out fault memory
No display Fault code 5520
Step 10
Display Fault code 5520 present
Step 17 and also continue test at
Step 10
10 Check DME control module
  • Ignition off
  • Connect plug D to DME control module
  • Disconnect plug B from DME control module
  • Ignition on
  • Erase fault memory
  • Update and read out fault memory
No display Fault code 5520
Step 11
Display Fault code 5520 present
Step 18 and also continue test at

11 Check Tiptronic control unit
  • Ignition off
  • Connect plug B to DME control module
  • Ignition on
  • Erase fault memory
  • Update and read out fault memory
No display Fault code 5520

Step 12
12 Check CAN bus between DME control module and Tiptronic control unit for short circuit to B+
  • Ignition off
  • Disconnect plug B from DME control module
  • Pull plug off the Tiptronic control unit
  • Ignition on
  • Measure voltage between Tiptronic control unit pin 85 and ground
  • Measure voltage between Tiptronic control unit pin 86 and ground
< 0.3 V
Step 13
Short circuit to B+
Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
13 Check CAN bus between DME control module and Tiptronic control unit for short circuit to ground
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between Tiptronic control unit plug pin 85 and ground
  • Measure resistance between Tiptronic control unit pin 86 and ground
Step 14 Short circuit to ground
Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
14 Check CAN drive between Tiptronic control unit and DME control module for short circuit with respect to each other
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between Tiptronic control unit pin 85 and pin 86
Step 15 Short circuit with respect to each other
Repair CAN wiring harness
-> End
15 Check CAN bus between DME control module and Tiptronic control unit for open circuit
  • Ignition off
  • Measure resistance between Tiptronic control unit pin 85 and DME control module plug B pin 3
  • Measure resistance between Tiptronic control unit pin 86 and DME control module plug B pin 4

Repair open circuit in CAN wiring harness

  • Replace ABS control unit
