Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. Hold a straightedge across threads of head bolts. Ensure head bolt threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, head bolts are stretched and must be replaced.
  2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install head bolts and use 4 gradual steps when tightening to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article. Tighten head bolts in proper sequence. See Figure.
  3. When tightening head bolts the required additional 1/4 turn, torque should exceed 90 ft. lbs. (122 N.m). Replace bolt if torque does NOT exceed this specification.
  4. When installing solid compressor mount, note bolt identification. See Figure. Tighten bolts in following order:
    • Bolt No. 1 - 30 INCH lbs. (3.3 N.m)
    • Bolts No. 2 and 3 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
    • Bolts No. 1, 4 and 5 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
    • Bolts No. 6 and 7 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
  5. Fill cooling system. Remove plug from top of thermostat housing. Allow air to bleed from cooling system. Install plug once coolant reaches thermostat housing level.
