Test K: ETS Off Warning Indicator Inoperative (1999 ALERO & 1999 Grand Am)

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Enter vehicle information into scan tool. Using scan tool, select BODY, then IPC. Select LAMP TEST. Using scan tool, command warning indicators on. If amber ETS OFF warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If amber ETS OFF warning indicator does not illuminate, perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - ALERO & GRAND AM article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Disconnect ETS switch harness connector. On Alero, connect a fused jumper wire between ETS harness connector terminals "A" and "B". On Grand Am, connect a fused jumper wire between ETS harness connector terminals "A" and "D". On all models, if amber ETS OFF warning indicator illuminates, go to step  7. If amber ETS OFF warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  4. On Alero, measure resistance between ETS harness connector terminal "B" (Black/White wire) and ground. On Grand Am, measure resistance between ETS harness connector terminal "D" (Black/White wire) and ground. On all models, resistance should be 0-2 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  8.
  5. Disconnect BCM connector C3. Using DVOM, measure resistance between BCM connector C3 terminal A5 and ETS switch harness connector terminal "A". Resistance should be 0-2 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  9.
  6. Check BCM harness connector C3 and ETS switch harness connector for damage, poor terminal contact and terminal corrosion. If a problem is found, go to step  10. If no problem is found, go to step  11.
  7. Replace ETS switch. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  8. Repair open or high resistance in Black/White wire between ETS switch and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  9. Repair open or high resistance in wire between ETS switch and BCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  10. Repair or replace connector terminals as necessary. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  11. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - ALERO & GRAND AM article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
