Instrument Panel Cluster Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. If scan tool lights up, go to next step. If scan tool does not light up, go to SCAN TOOL CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  .
  2. Use scan tool to communicate with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If scan tool communicates with IPC, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool does not communicate with IPC, go to next step.
  3. Attempt to establish communication with other devices on the class 2 serial data line (PCM, BCM). If scan tool communicates with other devices, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with other devices, go to SCAN TOOL CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  .
  4. Check IPC/HVAC BATT fuse (10-amp) located in left instrument panel junction block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Replace IPC/HVAC BATT fuse. Turn ignition on and check if fuse blows again. If fuse blows again, go to next step. If fuse is okay, check for intermittent short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Check for short to ground from IPC or left instrument panel junction block. If components are okay, check Orange wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block for short to ground. Repair as necessary and go to step  19 .
  7. Check IPC/BFC ACC fuse (10-amp) located in left instrument panel junction block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step  10 .
  8. Turn ignition off. Replace IPC/BFC ACC fuse. Turn ignition on and check if fuse blows again. If fuse blows again, go to next step. If fuse is okay, check for intermittent short to ground.
  9. Check for short to ground from IPC or left instrument panel junction block. If components are okay, check Purple wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block for short to ground. Repair as necessary and go to step  19 .
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IPC connector and remove connector comb. Turn ignition on. On Alero, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminal A12 (Orange wire) and ground. On Grand Am, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminal A4 (Orange wire) and ground. See Figure . On all models, if battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  14 .
  11. On Alero, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminal A2 (Purple wire) and ground. On Grand Am, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminal A8 (Purple wire) and ground. On all models, if battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  15 .
  12. On Alero, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminals A2 (Purple wire) and B7 (Black/White wire). On Grand Am, use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between IPC connector terminals A8 (Purple wire) and A6 (Black/White wire). On all models, if battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  16 .
  13. On Alero, use DVOM to measure resistance between IPC connector terminal B1 (Purple wire) and DLC terminal No. 2. On Grand Am, use DVOM to measure resistance between IPC connector terminal A9 (Purple wire) and DLC terminal No. 2. On all models, if reading is 0-2 ohms, go to step  18 . If reading is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  17 .
  14. Repair open in Orange wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block. After repairs, go to step  19 .
  15. Repair open in Purple wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block. After repairs, go to step  19 .
  16. Repair open in Black/White wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block. After repairs, go to step  19 .
  17. Repair open in Purple wire between IPC and left instrument panel junction block. After repairs, go to step  19 .
  18. Replace instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  19. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Use scan tool to clear any DTCs stored in IPC memory. If all DTCs are cleared, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
