Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Disconnect generator connector. Observe generator PWM on scan tool. If generator PWM reading indicates no percentage, go to next step. If generator PWM reading is any percentage, go to step  5 .
  3. Reconnect generator connector. Start engine and allow to idle. Observe generator PWM on scan tool. If generator PWM is greater than 50 percent, go to next step. If generator PWM is less than 50 percent, go to step  5 .
  4. Replace generator. After repairs, go to step  8 .
  5. Disconnect generator connector. Disconnect PCM connector C-1 (2.4L engine) or C-2 (3.4L engine). Use DVOM to measure voltage between generator connector terminal "C" (Gray wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If zero volts is indicated, go to step  7 . If other than zero volts is indicated, go to next step.
  6. Repair short to battery voltage in Gray wire between generator and PCM. After repairs, go to step  8 .
  7. Replace PCM. Use scan tool to program new PCM. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  8. Connect scan tool to DLC. Use scan tool to clear DTCs from memory. Go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
