Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Disconnect generator connector. Disconnect PCM connector C-1 (2.4L engine) or C-2 (3.4L engine). Use DVOM to measure resistance between PCM connector C-1 terminal No. 74 or C-2 terminal No. 61 (Red wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If any resistance is indicated, go to next step. If no resistance is indicated, go to step  4 .
  3. Repair short to ground in Red wire between generator connector terminal "B" and PCM connector C-1 terminal No. 74 (2.4L engine) or PCM connector C-2 terminal No. 61 (3.4L engine). After repairs, go to next step.
  4. Use DVOM to measure resistance between generator connector terminal "B" (Red wire) and PCM connector C-1 (2.4L engine) terminal No. 74 or C-2 terminal No. 61 (3.4L engine). If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to step  6 . If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Repair open in Red wire between generator and PCM. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  6. Connect fused jumper between generator connector terminals "C" (Gray wire) and "D" (Red wire). Start engine and allow to idle. Observe generator PWM on scan tool. If generator PWM is greater than 50 percent, go to next step. If generator PWM is less than 50 percent, go to step  8 .
  7. Start engine and allow to idle. Connect and disconnect generator connector. Observe generator PWM on scan tool. If generator PWM reading fluctuates, go to step  10 . If generator PWM reading does not fluctuate, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace PCM. Use scan tool to program new PCM. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace generator. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. Connect scan tool to DLC. Use scan tool to clear DTCs from memory. Go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
