Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between generator connector terminal "B" (Red wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If battery voltage is indicated, go to step  5 . If battery voltage is not indicated, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect generator connector. Disconnect PCM connector C-1 (2.4L engine) or C-2 (3.4L engine). Use DVOM to measure resistance between generator connector terminal "B" and PCM connector C-1 terminal No. 74 or C-2 terminal No. 61 (Red wire). If resistance is 0- ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  7 .
  4. Reconnect all disconnected components. Turn ignition on. Use DVOM to backprobe for voltage between PCM connector C-1 terminal No. 74 or C-2 terminal No. 61 (Red wire) and ground. If battery voltage is indicated, go to step  6 . If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  8 .
  5. Use scan tool to read PCM L-terminal input. If L-terminal input is zero volts, go to step  9 . If L-terminal input is not zero volts, go to step  8 .
  6. Replace generator. After repairs, go to step  9 .
  7. Repair open in Red wire between generator connector terminal "B" and PCM connector C-1 terminal No. 74 (2.4L engine) or PCM connector C-2 terminal No. 61 (3.4L engine). After repairs, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace PCM. Use scan tool to program new PCM. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  9. Connect scan tool to DLC. Use scan tool to clear DTCs from memory. Go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
