  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Disconnect IPC connector. Turn ignition on. On Alero, use DVOM to measure voltage between IPC connector terminal A2 (Purple wire) and ground. On Grand Am, use DVOM to measure voltage between IPC connector terminal A8 (Purple wire) and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . On all models, if battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, go to step  6 .
  3. Check for poor connection of Purple wire at IPC connector. If poor connection is found, go to next step. If connection is okay, go to step  5 .
  4. Repair poor connection at IPC connector. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  5. Replace instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  6. Disconnect left instrument panel junction block connector C-1. On Alero, use DVOM to measure resistance between instrument panel junction block connector C-1 terminal B9 and IPC connector terminal A2 (Purple wire). On Grand Am, use DVOM to measure resistance between instrument panel junction block connector C-1 terminal B9 and IPC connector terminal A8 (Purple wire). On all models, if reading is 0-2 ohms, go to step  8 . If reading is greater than 2 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Repair open in Purple wire between left instrument panel junction block and IPC. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  8. Check for poor connection at left instrument panel junction block connector C-1 terminal B9 (Purple wire). If poor connection is found, go to next step. If connection is okay, go to step  10 .
  9. Repair poor connection at left instrument panel junction block connector. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace left instrument panel junction block. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. Connect scan tool to DLC. Use scan tool to clear DTCs from memory. Go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
