TIMING CHAIN : Removal & Installation: Removal

  1. Remove the front cover. Refer to FRONT COVER : Removal and Installation .
  2. Set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke using the following procedure:
    1. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise and align the mating mark (B) to the timing indicator (A) on the front cover.

      NOTE: Do not use white marks (C) when setting TDC.
    2. Remove bolt and reposition the water pipe. Refer to WATER OUTLET : Exploded View .
    3. Remove the vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
    4. Remove bolt and reposition the vacuum tube. Refer to VACUUM LINES : Exploded View .
    5. Remove the EGR outlet tube.
      CAUTION: Do not reuse EGR outlet tube gasket and EGR volume control valve gasket.
    6. Disconnect the harness connector from the EGR volume control valve.
    7. Remove the EGR volume control valve.
      CAUTION: Do not reuse EGR volume control valve gasket.
    8. Disconnect the PCV hose from the rocker cover.
    9. Remove the engine oil gauge.
    10. Remove the high pressure fuel pump insulator. Refer to HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL HOSE : Exploded View .
    11. Disconnect the harness connectors from the ignition coils.
    12. Remove the ignition coils. Refer to IGNITION COIL : Exploded View .
    13. Disconnect harness retainers from rocker cover.
    14. Unbolt and reposition engine cover bracket.
    15. Loosen rocker cover bolts in reverse of the sequence shown and remove the rocker cover.

      CAUTION: Do not reuse the rocker cover gasket.
    16. At this time, check that the both intake camshaft (2) and exhaust camshaft (1) cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder are oriented (SYMBOL ) as shown.

      : Engine front
      • If not, rotate crankshaft pulley one revolution (360 degrees) and align as shown.
  3. Remove timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Push in timing chain tensioner (1) plunger until groove (A) is aligned with hole (B) in tensioner body.

      • Insert a suitable tool into hole to secure plunger.
    2. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
      CAUTION: Do not remove suitable tool from timing chain tensioner when removed from vehicle. If timing chain tensioner plunger becomes fully extended, replace timing chain tensioner.
  4. Remove bolts and remove the tension guide (3) and slack guide (2).

  5. Remove the timing chain (1).
    CAUTION: Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshafts while the timing chain is removed. It can cause damage to the valve and piston.
  6. Remove the camshaft sprockets using the following procedure (if necessary):
    1. Secure hexagonal part (A) of the camshaft with a suitable tool and loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

      : Camshaft sprocket (INT)

      : Camshaft sprocket (EXH)
    2. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and camshaft sprockets for both camshafts.
  7. Remove balancer unit timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Compress clip and push in on tensioner plunger.

    2. Push plunger in until the end of the plunger (B) is aligned with the hole (A) in the balancer unit timing chain tensioner (1) body.
      CAUTION: Do not remove suitable tool from timing chain tensioner when removed from vehicle. If timing chain tensioner plunger becomes fully extended, replace timing chain tensioner.
    3. Remove the balancer unit timing chain tensioner.
  8. Secure width across flats (B) of the balancer unit LH side shaft using a suitable tool. Loosen the balancer unit sprocket bolt (A).

  9. Remove balancer unit timing chain, balancer unit sprocket and crankshaft sprocket.
  10. Loosen balancer unit bolts in reverse of the sequence shown and remove balancer unit.

    CAUTION: Do not disassemble balancer unit.
