No sound is heard from the speaker(s) (display is normal) (with navigation)

NOTE:
  • Check the vehicle battery condition first (see BATTERY TEST ).
  • Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.
  • Set the fader and balance positions to the center.
  • Before troubleshooting, make sure you have anti-theft codes for the audio-navigation unit.
  • After troubleshooting, enter the anti-theft codes for the audio-navigation unit.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  2. Make sure the volume is not set to the MIN level, and check for sound in all modes (AM/FM, CD, XM, USB).

    Is there sound in all modes, and is the sound normal? 

    YES  -System is OK at this time. Check for poor connections at the audio-navigation unit, speakers, and stereo amplifier.

    NO  -

  3. On the steering wheel, check if the navigation talk command, and/or the HandsFreeLink talk command are set.

    Are the navigation talk command and/or the HFL talk command functions set? 

    YES  -Cancel the navigation talk command and/or HFL talk command by pressing the BACK button, and recheck.

    NO  -Go to step 4.

  4. Do the speaker check mode with self diagnostic function (see XM SELF-DIAGNOSIS  ).

    Did all speakers produce a tone? 

    YES  -Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), and recheck. If the symptom goes away, replace the original audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).

    NO  -Go to step 5.

  5. Check the subwoofer for tone.

    Did the subwoofer make a tone? 

    YES  -Go to step 6.

    NO  -Go to step  36.

  6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  7. Check the No. 8 (30 A) fuse in the main under-hood fuse box.

    Is the fuse OK? 

    YES  -Go to step 8.

    NO  -Replace the fuse, and recheck.

  8. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector B (18P) terminal No. 18 and body ground.

    Is there battery voltage? 

    YES  -Go to step 9.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the No. 8 (30 A) fuse in the main under-hood fuse box and stereo amplifier connector B (18P) terminal No. 18.

  9. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  10. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector A (28P) terminal No. 3 and body ground.

    Is there battery voltage? 

    YES  -Go to step 11.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit.

  11. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector B (18P) terminal No. 9 and body ground.

    Is there less than 0.2 V? 

    YES  -Go to step 12.

    NO  -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between stereo amplifier connector B (18P) terminal No. 9 and body ground (G504) (see CONNECTOR TO FUSE/RELAY BOX INDEX ).

  12. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  13. Check the speaker(s) with no sound for any damage.

    Is there any damage? 

    YES  -Replace the speaker(s) (see SPEAKER TEST/REPLACEMENT  ), and recheck.

    NO  -Go to step 14.

  14. Remove the speaker(s) that has no sound (see SPEAKER TEST/REPLACEMENT  ), and disconnect its connector.
  15. Check the speaker(s) connector for a loose or poor connection.

    Reconnect the speaker connector, and recheck the symptom; is the condition still present? 

    YES  -Go to step 16.

    NO  -Intermittent failure. Operation is normal.

  16. Test the speaker(s) (see SPEAKER TEST/REPLACEMENT  ).

    Is the speaker OK? 

    YES  -Go to step 17.

    NO  -Replace the speaker(s) (see SPEAKER TEST/REPLACEMENT  ).

  17. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  18. Do the audio-navigation unit self-diagnostic function DSP unit communication check (see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION  ).

    Is the DSP communication OK? 

    YES  -Go to step 19.

    NO  -Replace the audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).

  19. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  20. Reconnect the speaker connector(s).
  21. Disconnect stereo amplifier connector B (18P).
  22. Check for continuity between body ground and stereo amplifier connector B (18P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Repair a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the speaker(s).

    NO  -Go to step 23.

  23. Disconnect the left tweeter 2P connector and the right tweeter 2P connector.
  24. Measure the resistance between both pairs of speaker wires (+) and (-) at stereo amplifier connector B (18P) according to the table.

    Front center speaker: 4 Ω 

    Driver's door speaker: 2 Ω 

    Front passenger's door speaker: 2 Ω 

    Left rear door speaker: 2 Ω 

    Right rear door speaker: 2 Ω 

    Left satellite speaker: 4 Ω 

    Right satellite speaker: 4 Ω

    Is the resistance OK? 

    YES  -Go to step 25.

    NO  -Repair an open or a short in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the speaker(s).

  25. Disconnect these items:
    • Driver's door speaker 2P connector
    • Front passenger's door speaker 2P connector
    • Subwoofer 8P connector
  26. Connect the speaker connector terminal (+) and (-) with a jumper wire.

  27. Check for continuity between both pairs of speaker wires (+) and (-) at the stereo amplifier connector B (18P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step 28.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the speaker(s).

  28. Remove the audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), and disconnect audio-navigation unit connector F (20P).
  29. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector A (28P) and audio-navigation unit connector F (20P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step 30.

    NO  -There is an open in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  30. Check for continuity between the terminals of audio-navigation unit connector F (20P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals? 

    YES  -There is a short in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO  -Go to step 31.

  31. Check for continuity between body ground and stereo amplifier connector A (28P) terminal No. 1, No. 2, and No. 15 individually.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO  -Go to step 32.

  32. Disconnect audio-navigation unit connectors A (24P), and connector B (24P).
  33. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P), connector B (24P) and stereo amplifier connector A (28P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step 34.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier.

  34. Check for continuity between body ground and stereo amplifier connector A (28P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Repair a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier.

    NO  -Go to step 35.

  35. Check for continuity between the terminals of stereo amplifier connector A (28P) according to the table.

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals? 

    YES  -Repair a short in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier.

    NO  -Substitute a known-good stereo amplifier (see STEREO AMPLIFIER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original stereo amplifier (see STEREO AMPLIFIER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ). If the symptom is still present. Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original audio-navigation unit (see AUDIO-NAVIGATION UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).

  36. Measure the voltage between subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 5 and body ground.

    Is there battery voltage? 

    YES  -Go to step 37.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the No. 12 (10 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box and subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 5.

  37. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  38. Measure the voltage between subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 6 and body ground.

    Is there battery voltage? 

    YES  -Go to step  41.

    NO  -Go to step 39.

  39. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector A (28P) terminal No. 20 and subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 6.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step 40.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the subwoofer.

  40. Check for continuity between subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 6 and body ground.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Repair a short to body ground in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the subwoofer.

    NO  -Substitute a known-good subwoofer (see SUBWOOFER/AMPLIFIER UNIT (WITH NAVIGATION)  ), and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original subwoofer (see SUBWOOFER/AMPLIFIER UNIT (WITH NAVIGATION)  ). If the symptom is still present, substitute a known-good stereo amplifier (see STEREO AMPLIFIER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original stereo amplifier (see STEREO AMPLIFIER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).

  41. Measure the voltage between subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground.

    Is there less than 0.2V? 

    YES  -Go to step  12.

    NO  -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between subwoofer 8P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground (G606) (see CONNECTOR TO FUSE/RELAY BOX INDEX ).
