TCM Self-Diagnosis Does Not Activate

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Infiniti QX4, 2001 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2001 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use this procedure if O/D OFF indicator light does not illuminate in TCM self-diagnostic procedure even though O/D OFF indicator light circuit is okay. For O/D OFF indicator light circuit diagnosis, see O/D OFF INDICATOR LIGHT  under CIRCUIT TESTS.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Inspect voltage on PNP circuits at TCM harness connector while moving gearshift lever through each position. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . If voltage measurements are correct for all specified circuits, go to next step. If any voltage measurements are not correct, check the following items:
    • Inspect PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS.
    • Harness and connectors for open or short to ground between ignition switch and PNP switch.
    • Harness and connectors for open or short to ground between PNP switch and TCM.

    Repair as necessary.

  2. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal No. 22 and ground. See Figure. Battery voltage should be present with overdrive switch in ON position. No voltage should be present with switch in OFF position. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check harness and connectors for open or short. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, inspect switch. See OVERDRIVE SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS.
  3. Inspect voltage on throttle position switch circuits at TCM harness connector. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . If voltage measurements are correct for all circuits, go to next step. If voltage measurements are not correct, check harness and connectors for open or short to ground between ignition switch and throttle position switch, and between throttle position switch and TCM. If open or short is found, repair circuit(s) as necessary.
  4. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . If no DTCs are present, perform TCM SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If TCM self-diagnostic cannot be performed, inspect TCM connectors. Ensure connector terminals are clean and tight. Repair as necessary.
