Diagnostic Starting Point

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra, 2002 Infiniti G20, 2001 Nissan Sentra, and 2001 Infiniti G20. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: In addition to transaxle-related DTCs, engine-related DTCs may be output during RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  procedure. These DTCs pertain to engine performance and must be repaired first, as engine performance will greatly affect transaxle operation. For information and testing procedures of engine-related DTCs and components, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  1. Ask customer if any symptoms are present (if possible) and record. Determine if vehicle is in fail safe mode. See FAIL-SAFE MODE . Connect scan tool to DLC. See Figure. Retrieve and record DTCs and freeze-frame data. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Inspect transaxle fluid level and condition. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to next step.
  3. Perform ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. Record any symptoms that occur during road test. If any DTCs were recorded in step  1, ensure all conditions were met in appropriate DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE during road test. Go to next step.
  4. Perform LINE PRESSURE TEST PROCEDURE  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. Record results. Perform STALL SPEED TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. Record results. Go to next step.
  5. Retrieve and record DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TCM SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record flash codes. Go to next step.
  6. Diagnose and repair DTCs and flash codes listed. Go to applicable DTC test procedure under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS . Repair any engine performance related DTCs before any transaxle related DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Perform appropriate DTC confirmation procedure after each repair is completed. Perform ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS to confirm transaxle is operating correctly. Go to next step.
  7. If no DTCs or symptoms are present, repair is complete. If problem is still present, diagnose concern by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS . If a particular component is suspect, diagnosis and repair as needed. See COMPONENT TESTS . Go to next step.
  8. After repairs are completed, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS to confirm transaxle is operating correctly. If no DTCs are present and transaxle is operating properly, repair is complete. If transaxle is not operating properly, go to next step.
  9. If malfunction is not detected, consider the following conditions to recreate an intermittent malfunction:

    1. Vehicle Vibration

Drive vehicle on rough road or with engine vibrating at idle (with A/C on).
    2. Heat Or Cold Sensitive

Incident occurs when transmission fluid temperature is extremely hot or cold.
    3. Water Intrusion

Water may intrude into connectors and cause corrosion between connector terminals.
    4. Electrical Load

Operate multiple accessories (A/C, wipers, lights, etc.).
    5. Hot Or Cold Start

Start vehicle either hot or cold.
    6. Poor Connections

Wiring harnesses may be checked by gently wiggling wire harness during testing. Relays and sensors may be checked by gently tapping during testing.

If cause of customer complaint or malfunction is not found, return to step  1.
