Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit wiring diagram, see Figure . For connector identification and locations, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .

  1. Check EGR-VCV Power Supply Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR-VCV harness connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EGR-VCV harness connector terminals No. 2 and 5. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to step s 3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Fuse and fusible link box connector E22.
    • Fuse No. 34 (15-amp).
    • Harness connectors E9 and F47.
    • Harness for open or short between fuse and ECM relay.
    • ECM relay.
    • Harness for open or short between ECM relay and EGR-VCV.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  3. Check EGR-VCV Output Signal Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of the following:
    • Between EGR-VCV harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 8.
    • Between EGR-VCV harness connector terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 17.
    • Between EGR-VCV harness connector terminal No. 4 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 9.
    • Between EGR-VCV harness connector terminal No. 6 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 18.

See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.

  4. Check EGR Temperature Sensor

Check EGR temperature sensor as shown in illustration. See Figure . If EGR temperature sensor is okay, go to next step. If EGR temperature sensor is not okay, replace EGR temperature sensor. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  5. Check EGR Volume Control Valve

Check EGR-VCV as shown in illustration. See Figure . If EGR-VCV is okay, go to next step. If EGR-VCV is not okay, replace EGR-VCV. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  6. Check For Intermittent

Check for intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
