Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit wiring diagram, see Fig 1 . For connector identification and locations, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .

  1. Check Power Supply

Turn ignition off. Disconnect IVT control position sensor harness connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IVT control position sensor harness connector terminal No. 3. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step  3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Harness for open or short between IVT control position sensor and ECM relay.
    • Harness for open or short between IVT control position sensor and ECM.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  3. Check Input Signal Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity between IVT control position sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 65. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  4. Check Ground Circuit

Loosen and retighten engine ground screws. See Figure . Check continuity between ground and IVT control position sensor harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  6 .
  5. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Joint connector No. 2.
    • Harness for open or short between IVT control position sensor and ground.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  6. Check IVT Control Position Sensor

Remove IVT control position sensor. Visually inspect IVT control position sensor for chipping. Measure resistance between IVT control position sensor terminals No. 2 and 3. Resistance should be 600-740 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If problem is found, replace IVT control position sensor. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  7. Check Camshaft

Check for accumulation of debris on signal pick-up portion of camshaft. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, replace IVT control position sensor, then go to next step.
  8. Check For Intermittent

Check for intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
