Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit wiring diagram, see Fig 1 -Fig 3 . For connector identification and locations, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .

  1. Check Engine Start

Turn ignition off. Restart engine. If engine is running, go to next step. If engine is not running, go to step  3 .
  2. Search For Malfunctioning Circuit

If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  11 . Using CONSULT-II, perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode. Search for circuit which does not produce a momentary engine speed drop. Go to step  11 .
  3. Check Ignition Coil Power Supply Circuit At ECM

Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 110 and 112 by backprobing. See Figure and Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair ECM power supply circuit. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  4. Check Ignition Coil Power Supply Circuit At Condenser

Turn ignition off. Disconnect condenser harness connector. See Fig 4 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step  9 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Check Ignition Coil Power Supply Circuit Between Condenser & ECM Relay

Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM relay harness connector. See Fig 5 . Check continuity between ECM relay harness connector terminal No. 7 and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 . Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  6. Check Ignition Coil Power Supply Circuit At ECM Relay

Measure voltage between ground and ECM relay harness connector terminal No. 6. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step  8 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  7. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Fuse and fusible link box connector E22.
    • Fuse No. 34 (15-amp).
    • Harness for open or short between ECM relay and fuse.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  8. Check ECM Relay

Check ECM relay as shown in illustration. See Figure . If ECM relay is okay, go to step  15 . If ECM relay is not okay, replace ECM relay. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  9. Check Condenser Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 2. See Fig 1 . Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  10. Check Condenser

Measure resistance between condenser terminals (component side). Resistance should be more than one megohm at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace condenser. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  11. Check Ignition Coil Power Supply Circuit At Ignition Coil

Turn ignition off. Reconnect all harness connectors. Disconnect appropriate ignition coil harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short between ignition coil and ECM relay. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  12. Check Ignition Coil Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 . Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  13. Check Ignition Coil Output Signal Circuit

Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 35, 36, 37 or 38. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 . Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  14. Check Ignition Coil With Power Transistor

Check ignition coil as sown in illustration. See Fig 6 . If ignition coil is okay, go to next step. If ignition coil is not okay, replace ignition coil. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  15. Check For Intermittent

Check for intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
