Diagnostic Procedure

  1. INSPECTION START 

    Do you have CONSULT-II?

    Yes or No 

    1. Yes: GO TO 2.
    2. No: GO TO  3.
  2. CHECK PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH CIRCUIT (WITH CONSULT-II) 

    With CONSULT-II 

    1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. (Do not start engine.)
    2. Select "DATA MONITOR" mode for "A/T" with CONSULT-II.
    3. Read out P/N, R, D, 2nd position switches moving selector lever to each position.

      Check that the signal of the selector lever position is indicated properly.

    NOTE: "2 POSITION SW" indicates L position status.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO  8.
    2. NG: GO TO  4.

  3. CHECK PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH CIRCUIT (WITHOUT CONSULT-II) 

    Without CONSULT-II 

    1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. (Do not start engine.)
    2. Check voltage between TCM harness connector E143 terminals 27 (P/B), 34 (G), 35 (G/W), 36 (R/G) and ground while moving selector lever through each position.

      B: Battery voltage 

      0: 0V 

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO  9.
    2. NG: GO TO 4.

  4. CHECK PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH 

    Check the following item:

    • Park/neutral position (PNP) switch

      Check continuity between PNP switch harness connector F29 terminals 1 and 2 and between terminals 3 and 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 while moving manual shaft through each position.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO  7.
    2. NG: GO TO 5.

  5. CHECK MANUAL CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT 

    Check PNP switch again with manual control cable disconnected from manual shaft of A/T assembly. Refer to test group 2 (With CONSULT-II) or 7 (With out CONSULT-II).

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: Adjust manual control cable. Refer to "CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT ".
    2. NG: GO TO 6.
  6. CHECK PNP SWITCH ADJUSTMENT 

    Remove PNP switch from A/T assembly and check continuity of PNP switch terminals. Refer to test group 3.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: Adjust PNP switch. Refer to "PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH ADJUSTMENT ".
    2. NG: Repair or replace PNP switch.
  7. DETECT MALFUNCTIONING ITEM 

    Check the following items:

    • Fuse
    • Harness for short or open between ignition switch and park/neutral position (PNP) switch
    • Harness for short or open between park/neutral position (PNP) switch and TCM
    • Harness for short or open between park/neutral position (PNP) switch and combination meter
    • Harness for short or open between combination meter and TCM
    • Ignition switch

      Refer to "POWER DISTRIBUTION ".

    OK or NG 

    1. OK (With CONSULT-II): GO TO 8.
    2. OK (Without CONSULT-II): GO TO  9.
    3. NG: Repair or replace damaged parts.
  8. CHECK OVERDRIVE CONTROL SWITCH CIRCUIT (WITH CONSULT-II) 

    With CONSULT-II 

    1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. (Do not start engine.)
    2. Select "DATA MONITOR" mode for "A/T" with CONSULT-II.
    3. Read out "OVERDRIVE SW".

      Check the signal of the overdrive control switch is indicated properly.

      (Overdrive switch "ON" displayed on CONSULT-II means overdrive "OFF".)

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO  10.
    2. NG: GO TO 9.

  9. CHECK OVERDRIVE CONTROL SWITCH 

    Check the following item:

    • Overdrive control switch
      • Check continuity between A/T device (overdrive control switch) harness connector M34 terminals 1 and 2.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO 10.
    2. NG: Repair or replace damaged parts.

  10. DETECT MALFUNCTIONING ITEM 

    Check the following items:

    • Harness for short or open between combination meter and A/T device (overdrive control switch)
    • Harness of ground circuit for A/T device (overdrive control switch) for short or open
    • Combination meter

      Refer to "COMBINATION METERS ".

    OK or NG 

    1. OK (With CONSULT-II): GO TO 11.
    2. OK (Without CONSULT-II): GO TO  12.
    3. NG: Repair or replace damaged parts.
  11. CHECK CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION AND WIDE OPEN THROTTLE POSITION SIGNAL CIRCUIT (WITH CONSULT-II) 

    With CONSULT-II 

    1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. (Do not start engine.)
    2. Select "DATA MONITOR" mode for A/T with CONSULT-II.
    3. Read out "CLOSED THL/SW" and "W/O THRL-SW" depressing and releasing accelerator pedal.

      Check the signal of throttle position signal is indicated properly.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO  13.
    2. NG: Check the following items. If any items are damaged, repair or replace damaged parts.
  12. CHECK CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION AND WIDE OPEN THROTTLE POSITION SIGNAL CIRCUIT (WITHOUT CONSULT-II) 

    Without CONSULT-II 

    Check the following items:

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: GO TO 13.
    2. NG: Repair or replace damaged parts.
  13. CHECK SYMPTOM 

    Check again.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: INSPECTION END 
    2. NG: GO TO 14.
  14. CHECK TCM INSPECTION 
    1. perform TCM input/output signal inspection. Refer to "TCM TERMINALS AND REFERENCE VALUE ".
    2. If NG, recheck TCM pin terminals for damage or loose connection with harness connector.

    OK or NG 

    1. OK: INSPECTION END 
    2. NG: Repair or replace damaged parts.
