Diagnostic Procedure

  1. STEP 1. Scan tool CAN bus diagnostics 

    Using scan tool MB991958, diagnose the CAN bus lines.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 3.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines. (Refer to TROUBLESHOOTING ). After repairing the CAN bus line, go to Step 2.
  2. STEP 2. Check whether the DTC is reset. 

    Q: Is DTC No. C1616 set? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 3.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
  3. STEP 3. Scan tool diagnostic trouble code 

    Q: Is the DTC set? 

    1. YES:  Perform the relevant troubleshooting.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 4.
  4. STEP 4. Scan tool data list 

    Item 42: Ignition switch (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  .)

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 9.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 5.
  5. STEP 5. Ignition switch check 
    1. Disconnect C-212 ignition switch connector, and check the continuity between the terminals No. 1 and No. 5 at the ignition switch side.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

      OK: No continuity 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 6.
    2. NO:  Replace the ignition switch. (Refer to ON-VEHICLE SERVICE ). Then go to  Step 10.
  6. STEP 6. Ignition switch connector, ETACS-ECU connector check: C-212, C-315 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 7.
    2. NO:  Repair the defective connector. Then go to  Step 10.
  7. STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between C-212 ignition switch connector terminal No. 5 and C-315 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 7. 

    Check the power supply line for short (for short to the power supply) circuit.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 8.
    2. NO:  Repair the wiring harness. Then go to  Step 10.
  8. STEP 8. Scan tool data list 

    ETACS item No. 287: Starter switch (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE ).

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 9.
    2. NO:  Replace the ETACS-ECU. (Refer to ETACS-ECU ). Then go to Step 9.
  9. STEP 9. Check whether the DTC is reset. 

    Q: Is DTC No. C1616 set? 

    1. YES:  Replace the AWC-ECU. (Refer to AWC-ECU ). Then go to Step 10.
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction. (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).
  10. STEP 10. Check whether the DTC is reset. 

    Q: Is DTC No. C1616 set? 

    1. YES:  Return to  Step 1.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
