Inspection Procedure 2: The Stoplights Do Not Illuminate Or Go Out Normally: Diagnosis

Required Special Tools: 

  1. STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), check data list 
    CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-III), always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-III).
    1. Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-III). Refer to "HOW TO CONNECT SCAN TOOL (M.U.T.-III) ".
    2. Check the input signals from the stoplight switch.
      • Brake pedal: depressed
        Item No. Item name Normal condition
        Item 290 stoplight switch ON

        OK: Normal condition is displayed. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

  2. STEP 2. Check the bulb of the stoplights 

    Check the bulb of the defective lights.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    • YES:  Go to Step 3.
    • NO:  Replace the bulb of the defective lights.
  3. STEP 3. Resistance measurement at the stoplight connectors (ground terminals). 
    1. Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
    2. Measure the resistance between the rear combination light (LH) connector (ground terminal) and ground.
    3. Measure the resistance between the rear combination light (RH) connector (ground terminal) and ground.
    4. Measure the resistance between the high-mounted stoplight connector (ground terminal) and ground.

      OK: The resistance should be 2 ohms or less 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

  4. STEP 4. Check of open circuit in ground line between the rear combination light (LH) connector, rear combination light (RH) connector, high-mounted stoplight connector and ground. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    • YES:  Go to Step 5.
    • NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.
  5. STEP 5. Voltage measurement at stoplight connectors (power supply terminals). 
    1. Remove the front fog light relay, and measure at the relay box side.
    2. Check the voltage between the rear combination light (LH) connector (power supply terminal) and ground.
    3. Check the voltage between the rear combination light (RH) connector (power supply terminal) and ground.
    4. Check the voltage between the high-mounted stoplight connector (power supply terminal) and ground.

      OK: The voltage should measure approximately 12 volts (battery positive voltage). 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    • YES:  Go to Step  7.
    • NO:  Go to Step 6.
  6. STEP 6. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, and open circuit in STLO line between ETACS-ECU connector and rear combination light (LH) connector, rear combination light (RH) connector, high-mounted stoplight connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    • YES:  Go to Step 7.
    • NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.
  7. STEP 7. Retest the system 

    Check that the stoplights illuminates normally.

    Q: Is the check result normal?
