Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. STEP 1. Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), diagnose the CAN bus line 
    CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool (M.U.T.-III), always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool (M.U.T.-III).
    1. Connect scan tool (M.U.T.-III). Refer to HOW TO CONNECT THE SCAN TOOL (M.U.T.-III)
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
    3. Diagnose the CAN bus line.
    4. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.

    Q: Is the CAN bus line found to be normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 2.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to DIAGNOSIS ). On completion, go to  Step 6.
  2. STEP 2. Check whether the DTC is stored. 

    Check whether the KOS-related diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    Q: Is the diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Diagnose the KOS. (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART ).
    2. NO:  Go to Step 3.
  3. STEP 3. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 

    Check if a diagnostic trouble code, which relates to CAN communication-linked systems below, is stored.

    • ETACS-ECU

      U0168: KOS timeout

    Q: Is the diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 4.
    2. NO:  Go to  Step 5.
  4. STEP 4. Check whether the diagnostic trouble code is stored again. 

    Recheck if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    1. Erase the diagnostic trouble code.
    2. Ignition switch: LOCK (OFF) to ON
    3. Check if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    Q: Is the diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the KOS, and then go to  Step 6.
    2. NO:  A poor connection, open circuit or other intermittent malfunction in the CAN bus line between the KOS and the heater controller assembly (A/C-ECU) (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).
  5. STEP 5. Check whether the diagnostic trouble code is stored again. 

    Recheck if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    1. Erase the diagnostic trouble code.
    2. Ignition switch: LOCK (OFF) to ON
    3. Check if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    Q: Is the diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the heater controller assembly (A/C-ECU) and then go to Step 6.
    2. NO:  A poor connection, open circuit or other intermittent malfunction in the CAN bus line between the KOS and the heater controller assembly (A/C-ECU) (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).
  6. STEP 6. Check whether the diagnostic trouble code is stored again. 

    Recheck if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    1. Erase the diagnostic trouble code.
    2. Ignition switch: LOCK (OFF) to ON
    3. Check if the diagnostic trouble code is stored.

    Q: Is the diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Return to  Step 1.
    2. NO:  The procedure is complete.
