INSPECTION PROCEDURE 1: Speedometer does not Work. < A/T >: Diagnosis

Required Special Tools: 

• MB991223: Harness Set
• MB991958: Scan Tool (MUT-III Sub Assembly)
  • MB991824: Vehicles Communication Interface (V.C.I.)
  • MB991827: MUT-III USB Cable
  • MB991911: MUT-III Main Harness B (Vehicles without CAN communication system)

1. STEP 1. Check with other meter. 

   Check to see that the tachometer, fuel gauge and water thermometer are operating normally.

   Q: Do all other meters operate? 

   1. YES < other meters all operate. >:  Go to Step 2.
   2. NO < one of the meters do not operate. >:  Refer to INSPECTION PROCEDURE 6  .
2. STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991958, read the diagnostic trouble code. 
   CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991958, always turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
   1. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
   2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
   3. Read the MFI system diagnostic trouble code.

   Q: Is DTC P0720 output? 

   1. YES:  Refer to MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) 2.0L ENGINE - LANCER or MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) 2.4L ENGINE - LANCER RALLIART .
   2. NO:  Go to Step 3.

3. STEP 3. Check combination meter connector C-01 and PCM connector C-116 < 2.0L > or C-138 < 2.4L > for damage. 

   Q: Are combination meter connector C-01 and PCM connector C-116 < 2.0L > or C-138 < 2.4L > in good condition? 

   1. YES:  Go to Step 4.
   2. NO:  Repair or replace the connector. Refer to HARNESS CONNECTOR INSPECTION . The speedometer should work normally.

4. STEP 4. Check the wiring harness between combination meter connector C-01 (terminal 12) and PCM connector C-116 < 2.0L > (terminal 80) or C-138 < 2.4L > (terminal 79.)

   NOTE: Also check joint connector (5) C-21 and intermediate connector C-124. If joint connector (5) C-21 or intermediate connectors C-124 is damaged, repair or replace the connector as described in HARNESS CONNECTOR INSPECTION .

   Q: Are the wiring harness between combination meter connector C-01 (terminal 12) and PCM connector C-116 (terminal 80) < 2.0L > or C-138 (terminal 79) < 2.4L > in good condition? 

   1. YES:  Go to Step 5.
   2. NO:  Repair the wiring harness. The speedometer should work normally.

5. STEP 5. Check in auto-cruise control. 

   Q: Does auto-cruise control take effect? 

   1. YES:  Replace the combination meter. The speedometer should work normally.
   2. NO:  Replace the PCM. The speedometer should work normally.
