Diagnostic Procedure
- Using scan tool, monitor select switch, shift switch (up) and shift switch (down). See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY OPERATION
table. Is the switch operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If all shift select switches are inoperative, go to next step. If shift switch (up) and shift switch (down) are both inoperative, go to step 4
. If only select switch is inoperative, go to step 7
. If only shift switch (up) is inoperative, go to step 24
. If only shift switch (down) is inoperative, go to step 28
.
- Check all harness connectors between shift switch assembly and PCM for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Using scan tool, monitor select switch, shift switch (up), shift switch (down). See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY OPERATION
table. Is the switch operating properly? If so, malfunction is intermittent. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check the shift switch assembly. See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY
under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the shift switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace shift switch assembly.
- Check all harness connectors between shift switch assembly and junction block. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connectors.
- Check wire harness for open or short to ground between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 3 and junction block harness connector D-212 terminal No. 9. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 3
. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch. Turn ignition on. The scan tool should display "D" when the gearshift lever is in the "D" position. Turn ignition off. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 15
.
- Check the shift switch assembly. See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY
under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the shift switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace shift switch assembly.
- Check shift switch assembly harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the power supply voltage at shift switch assembly harness connector. Disconnect shift switch assembly harness connector and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition on. Gearshift lever position should be "D" position. Measure the voltage between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 12
. If not, go to next step.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, repair open in wire harness between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 1 and PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the shift switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Gearshift lever should be sport mode position. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 109 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 14
. If not, go to next step.
- Check all harness connectors between PCM and shift switch assembly. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open or short to ground in wire harness between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 109. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to step 3
. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the PNP switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace the PNP switch. See appropriate SERVICING article.
- Check PNP switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the power supply voltage at PNP switch harness connector. Disconnect PNP switch harness connector and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 7 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 19
. If not, go to next step.
- Check all harness connectors between PNP switch and junction block for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open or short to ground in wire harness between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 7 and junction block harness connector D-212 terminal No. 9. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check all harness connectors between PCM and PNP switch. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 102. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check all harness connectors between shift switch assembly and combination meter for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check wire harness for short to ground between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 3 and shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 1. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check wire harness for short to ground between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 5 and combination meter harness connector D-05 terminal No. 4. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, go to step 3
. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Check the shift switch assembly. See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY
under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the shift switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace shift switch assembly.
- Check shift switch assembly harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the shift switch output voltage at PCM harness connector. Disconnect PCM harness connector and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 122 and ground. Battery voltage should exist when the gearshift lever is held in the upshift position. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 14
. If not, go to next step.
- Check all harness connectors between PCM and shift switch assembly for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open or short to ground in wire harness between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 7 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 122. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
- Check the shift switch assembly. See SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY
under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the shift switch operating properly? If so, go to next step. If not, replace shift switch assembly.
- Check shift switch assembly harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
- Check the shift switch output voltage at PCM harness connector. Disconnect PCM harness connector and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition on. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 110 and ground. Battery voltage should exist when the gearshift lever is in downshift position and held. Turn ignition off, Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step 14
. If not, go to next step.
- Check all harness connectors between PCM and shift switch assembly for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, repair open or short to ground in wire harness between shift switch assembly harness connector terminal No. 8 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 110. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
