Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Using scan tool, monitor pattern select switch. Turn ignition on. Operate pattern select switch. When the pattern select switch is in the HOLD position, the scan tool should indicate ON and when the pattern select switch is not in the HOLD position, scan tool should indicate OFF. Is the pattern select switch operating properly? If so, malfunction may be intermittent. If not, go to next step.
  2. Check the pattern select switch. See PATTERN SELECT SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Is the pattern select switch operating properly. If so, go to next step. If not, replace pattern select switch.
  3. Check pattern select switch harness connector for damage. Is the harness connector in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector.
  4. Check pattern select switch output voltage at PCM harness connector by backprobing. Do not disconnect harness connector. Measure the voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 126 and ground. When the pattern select switch is in HOLD position, battery voltage should exist. When the pattern select switch is not in HOLD position, less than one volt should exist. Turn ignition off. Is the voltage as specified? If so, go to step  7 . If not, go to next step.
  5. Check all harness connectors between pattern select switch and PCM. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  6. Check wire harness for damage between pattern select switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 126. Is the wire harness in good condition? If so, repair damage to wire harness between pattern select switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and junction block harness connector D-13 terminal No. 11. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
  7. Check PCM harness connectors for damage. Are the harness connectors in good condition? If so, go to next step. If not, repair or replace defective harness connector(s).
  8. If not, possible faulty PCM exists. Replace the PCM if necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
