DTC 78: Accumulator

  1. Check for other DTCs. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC 53 is present, perform DTC 53: MOTOR RELAY  test, then retest system for normal operation. If only DTC 78 is retrieved, go to next step.
  2. Inspect Hydraulic Brake Booster (HBB) for fluid leakage. If there is leakage, repair HBB, see OVERHAUL  . After repairs are completed, retest system for normal operation. If HBB is not leaking, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Depress brake pedal at least 40 times or until brake pedal can no longer be depressed. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe pump motor operation. If pump motor turns off within 5 minutes, replace accumulator assembly. See OVERHAUL  . If motor does not turn off within 5 minutes, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position, then wait for 2 minutes. Ensure pump motor continues to run during this time. Measure voltage between ABS-ECU connector E-106 terminal No. 43 (Brown/Green wire) and ground by backprobing connector. See Figure . If measured voltage is less then 2 volts, go to next step. If measured voltage is more than 2 volts, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position, then wait for 2 minutes. Ensure pump motor continues to run during this time. Measure voltage between ABS-ECU connector E-106 terminal No. 17 (Brown/Black wire) and ground by backprobing connector. If measured voltage is 4 volts, problem exists with another system. Perform DTC 53: MOTOR RELAY  test. Retest system for normal operation. If voltage is not 4 volts, replace HBB master cylinder and hydraulic unit assembly. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system for normal operation.
  6. Remove HBB, see HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disassemble HBB and inspect power piston, master cylinder piston and master cylinder lining for corrosion and abnormal wear. See OVERHAUL  . Repair HBB as necessary then retest system. If HBB is okay and problem persists, problem exists with pressure switch. Replace HBB unit, then retest system for normal operation.
