DTC 53: Motor Relay

  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe pump motor operation. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If pump motor turns off, go to next step. If motor does not turn off, remove pump motor relay A. If pump motor stops, replace relay A and retest system for normal operation. If pump motor remains running reinstall pump motor relay A. Replace pump motor relay B with NEW relay, retest system for normal operation.
  2. With ignition switch at LOCK position, depress brake pedal 40 or more times until brake pedal operation is no longer possible. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If pump motor operates go to step  7 . If pump motor does not operate, go to next step.
  3. Check pump motor relay A resistance values. See PUMP MOTOR RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace relay if operation is not as specified.
  4. Check pump motor relay B resistance values. See PUMP MOTOR RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace relay if operation is not as specified.
  5. Check Red/White wiring between fusible link No. 9 and motor relay connectors B-15X and B-16X. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If wiring is okay, go to next step.
  6. Check Green/Red wiring between HBB connector B-18 and pump motor relay B-15X. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check Blue/Red wiring between HBB connector B-17 and pump motor relay B-16X. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring if necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If wiring is okay, then go to next step.
  7. Check pump motor relay A continuity. See PUMP MOTOR RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace relay if operation is not as specified.
  8. Check pump motor relay B continuity. See PUMP MOTOR RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace relay if operation is not as specified.
  9. Turn ignition switch to ON position. While leaving ABS-ECU connector E-105 connected, measure voltage between terminal No. 6 (Brown/Yellow wire) and ground while backprobing. See Figure . Observe pump motor operation while measuring voltage. When pump motor is operating, measured voltage should be less then 2 volts. When pump motor does not operate, measured voltage should be 12 volts. If voltages are as specified, go to next step. If voltages are not as specified, go to step  12 .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ABS-ECU connector E-105 and inspect connector for damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair as necessary then retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  11. Check Brown/Yellow wire between ABS-ECU and pump motor relay B for continuity. Check Orange/Green wire between pump motor relay B and dedicated fuse No. 24 (10 amp). Check Blue/Red wire between dedicated fuse No. 24 and Ignition Switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring as necessary, then retest system. If wiring is okay and problem persists, replace ABS-ECU then retest system for normal operation. See ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANTI-LOCK - MONTERO article.
  12. With ignition switch in ON position, measure volage between ABS-ECU connector E-106 terminal No. 38 (Brown) and ground by backprobing connector. See Figure . Observe pump motor operation while measuring voltage. When pump motor is operating, measured voltage should be less then 2 volts. When pump motor does not operate, measured voltage should be 12 volts. If voltages are as specified, go to next step. If voltages are not as specified, go to step  15 .
  13. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ABS-ECU connector E-106. Inspect connector for damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is damaged, repair as necessary then retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  14. Check Brown wire between ABS-ECU and pump motor relay A. Check Red/Yellow wire between pump motor relay A and junction block D-212 fuse No. 5 (10 amp). Check Red/Blue wire between junction block fuse No. 5 and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If wiring is okay and problem persists, replace ABS-ECU then retest system for normal operation. See ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANTI-LOCK - MONTERO article.
  15. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ABS-ECU connector E-106. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ABS-ECU connector E-106 terminal No. 45 (Pink wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, replace ABS-ECU then retest system for normal operation. See ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANTI-LOCK - MONTERO article. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
  16. Inspect ABS-ECU connector E-106 and HBB connector B-17 for corroded or damaged terminals. Repair connectors as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  17. Check Pink wire between ABS-ECU and HBB connector B-17. Repair wiring as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If wiring is okay and problem persists, replace HBB master cylinder. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system for normal operation.
