Test B: Tachometer Does Not Work
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
- Connect scan tool to data link connector. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DTC P0300 is not displayed, go to next step. If P0300 is displayed See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Check speedometer. If speedometer does not operate normally, see SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK . If speedometer operates normally, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, check resistance between ground and instrument cluster D-05 or C-05 connector terminal No. 25 (Black wire) on Montero or terminal No. 13 (Black wire) on Montero Sport. See Figure and Fig 1 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, check instrument cluster connector and harness wiring. Repair as necessary. If connector and wiring are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect instrument cluster connector D-03 (Montero) or C-04 (Montero Sport). Start engine and run at idle. Measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 62 (Black/White wire - Montero) or No. 24 (Black/White wire - Montero Sport). See Figure or Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is approximately 10 volts, replace instrument cluster or speedometer and tachometer. If voltage does not meet specification, go to next step.
- On Montero, check wiring between A/C compressor controller to ignition power transistor and instrument cluster connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . On Montero Sport, check wiring between instrument cluster and ignition power transistor. On all models, if connectors or wiring are damaged, repair as necessary. If connectors and wiring are okay, tachometer should work normally.
