Test A: Speedometer Does Not Work
- Connect scan tool to data link connector, check for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DTC P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is set, diagnose this DTC first. Go to step 7 . Also see VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) under COMPONENT TESTS. If DTC P0500 is not set, go to next step.
- If trip odometer is not working normally, go to next step. If trip odometer is working normally go to step 6
- Disconnect instrument cluster connector D-03 on Montero models or connector C-04 on Montero Sport models. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect DVOM between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 62 (Black/White wire) on Montero or terminal No. 24 (Black/White wire) on Montero Sport. See Fig 1 or Fig 3 and WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check harness connectors and harness wiring between instrument cluster and ignition switch for damage. Repair as necessary.
- Using a DVOM, check resistance between ground and instrument cluster D-05 or C-04 connector terminal No. 25 (Black wire) on Montero or terminal No. 31 (Black wire) on Montero Sport. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 and WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, check printed circuit board or tachometer and speedometer. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, check instrument cluster connector and harness wiring. Repair as necessary. On Montero, if connector and wiring are okay, go to step 6 . On Montero Sport, if connector and wiring are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect instrument cluster connector C-02. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between terminal No. 53 (Red/Black wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check harness connectors and harness wiring between instrument cluster and fusible link for damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
- Disconnect instrument cluster connector D-03 on Montero models or connector C-02 on Montero Sport models. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect DVOM between ground and harness side of instrument cluster connector terminal No. 65 (White/Blue wire) on Montero or terminal No. 51 (Yellow/White wire) on Montero Sport. See Fig 2 or Fig 4 and WIRING DIAGRAMS . Voltage should be 5 volts. If voltage is okay, repair or replace printed circuit board or speedometer and tachometer. If voltage is not 5 volts, check instrument cluster and harness wiring. Repair as necessary. If connector and wiring are okay, go to next step.
- Backprobe vehicle speed sensor harness connector and connect DVOM to harness side. Check vehicle speed sensor power supply voltage between terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is okay, go to next step. If voltage is not present, check vehicle speed sensor harness connector and wiring. Repair as necessary.
- Using DVOM, check resistance between ground and vehicle speed sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, check instrument cluster connector and harness wiring. Repair as necessary. If connector and wiring are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect vehicle speed sensor harness connector. Connect DVOM between ground and harness side terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire on Montero; Yellow/White wire on Montero Sport). On Montero, if 9 volts are not present, replace vehicle speed sensor. If 9 volts are present, go to next step. On Montero Sport, if more than 9 volts are present, replace vehicle speed sensor, speedometer should work normally. If about 9 volts are present. Retest system. If malfunction is eliminated, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS under ENGINE PERFORMANCE - MITSUBISHI. If malfunction is not eliminated, replace speedometer.
- Check harness wiring between vehicle speed sensor connector, auto-cruise control PCM connector and instrument cluster connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If connectors or wiring are damaged, repair as necessary. If connectors and wiring are okay, go to next step.
- Connect scan tool to data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read DTC. Disconnect radio and tape player connector. If DTC P0500 does not reset, replace radio and tape player. If speedometer does not work, disconnect auto-cruise control ECU connector. If DTC P0500 does not reset, replace auto-cruise control ECU. If speedometer does not work, disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. If DTC P0500 does not reset, replace instrument cluster. If DTC P0500 resets when any connector is disconnected, replace PCM.
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn ignition off before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
NOTE:
If PCM is replaced, immobilizer-ECU should also be replaced. Each PCM has an encrypted code for immobilizer-ECU, and is registered in immobilizer-ECU.
