Inspection (2.0L DOHC)

  1. Inspect components for damage. Install oil pump gears in front cover. Using feeler gauge, measure gear-to-front cover clearance between tip of teeth on each gear and front cover.
  2. Place straightedge across front cover above oil pump gears. Using feeler gauge, check gear side clearance between straightedge and gears. Check for ridge on oil pump cover in gear operating area.
  3. Ensure pressure relief valve moves without restriction in bore. Replace components if damaged or not within specification. See OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS (2.0L)  table.
  4. On turbo models, ensure oil jets and check valves are not clogged or damaged. Ensure oil cooler by-pass valve slides freely. Remove valve, and measure distance from valve body to tip of valve at room temperature. Distance should be 1.358" (34.49 mm).
  5. Heat oil to 212°F (100°C), and submerge valve in heated oil for 2 minutes. Distance from valve body to tip of valve should be at least 1.57" (39.88 mm). Replace valve assembly if measurements are not as specified.
