Replacing bellows for the left or right steering gear (Cooper)
Attention!
If the surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. by corrosion), then the steering gear must be replaced!
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove front WHEEL .
- Remove front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
Removal:
Slacken nut (1).
Release tie rod (2) from swivel bearing.
Identify the screw-in depth of the tie rod end to simplify the following setting of the front axle.
Remove screw (1).
Unscrew tie rod end (2).
- Counterhold tie rod with open-end wrench if necessary.
Before disassembly, clean the tie rod, bellows and area around the bellows in order to prevent dirt ingress!
Release EAR CLAMP (1).
Release band clamp (1) and detach bellows (2) from tie rod.
Installation:
Grease tie rod at the fit of the bellows (1) with FB-1 lubricating grease, BMW part number "2 208 093".
- This ensures that, when the tie rod is twisted, the bellows is not turned along with it.
Before the installation of the bellows, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the bellows with FB-1 lubricating grease, BMW part number 2 208 093.
Position the bellows (2) on the steering gear.
Part : Release ear clip (1).
Mount EAR CLAMP (1).
Position the bellows (2) on the tie rod.
Mount the clip (1).
Screw the tie rod end (2) onto the tie rod up to the mark.
- Counterhold tie rod with open-end wrench if necessary.
Tighten screw (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
Keep tie rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.
Insert tie rod (2) into swivel bearing.
Part : Replace nut (1).
Tighten nut (1).
Tightening torque, 32 21 1AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install front WHEEL .
- Install front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Perform either KDS CHASSIS/WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK WITH VEHICLE LOAD UP TO DESIGN POSITION or KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH RIDE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT WITHOUT LOADING THE VEHICLE .
