Replace rubber mounts for the rear axle differential/rear axle support (AWD)

Special tools required:

33 0 183
33 0 184

Preliminary work needed:

Remove complete EXHAUST SYSTEM.
Remove the right TANK COVER .
Remove and tie back PROP SHAFT on rear axle differential.

Removal:

Loosen screws (1).

Remove cover (2).

Disconnect connector (1).

Loosen cable (2) from control unit bracket.

Support rear axle differential (1) with workshop jack and special tool 23 4 150.

Secure rear axle differential against falling out with luggage strap (2).

Loosen screw (1).

Loosen screws (1) on cross member (2) on the left and right.

Carefully lower rear axle differential (1) until the rubber mount becomes accessible on the rear axle support.

Pull out rubber mount with special tools 33 0 181, 33 0 183, 33 0 184 and 33 0 185.

Installation:

IMPORTANT: Coat bearing bush in rear axle support and new rubber mount (1) with Circo Light (refer to BMW Group parts sales).
Make sure that the larger protruding part of the rubber mount (1) is pointing towards the rear axle differential (arrow).

Align rubber mount (1) with the rear axle support as shown in the graphic.

Install rubber mount (1) with special tools 33 0 181, 330 184, 330 185 and 2 406 775 up to the stop in the rear axle support.

Lift rear axle differential (1) and align with rear axle support.

Hand-tighten screw (1).

Tighten screws (1) on the cross member (2) on the left and right.

Tightening torque 33 31 3AZ .

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 33 17 1AZ .

Secure cable (2) on control unit bracket.

Connect connector (1) to control unit.

Release luggage strap (2).

Lower and place aside special tools 23 4 150 and workshop jack.

Position cover (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

Tightening torque 33 31 8AZ .

Required follow-up work:

Install PROP SHAFT on the rear axle differential.
Install right TANK COVER .
Completely install the EXHAUST SYSTEM .
