52 13 405 Replacing backrest cover for left or right front seat

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Up to 09/2009: 

WARNING: Read and comply with SAFETY REGULATIONS for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners. for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical belt tensioners.
Improper handling can lead to triggering of the pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner or side airbag, resulting in injuries.

Switch off the ignition!

Only on version without  rear panel:

Lever out pin (1) and remove expanding rivet.

Installation note: 

If necessary, replace faulty expanding rivet.

Lever out welt from backrest cover in marked area.

Open zip fasteners on left and right.

Only on version with  rear panel:

Lever out clips (1).

Detach backrest cover (2) from backrest frame.

Unlock backrest and tilt forwards.

This partially relieves torsion spring (1).

WARNING: Torsion spring (1) is still tensioned. Danger of injury!
In addition, the seat cover may tear if the spring is relieved in an uncontrolled manner (e. g. if the pliers slip).

Using pliers, carefully detach torsion spring (1) from the bolt.

Release bolt (2) and detach torsion spring from axle bolt.

Tightening torque 52 13 06AZ .

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage!

Feed out backrest cover via bolt (1) on the backrest frame.

To make it easier, carefully lift the seat frame shank (2) using a suitable tool.

Cut open cable strap (1).

Unlock connector (2) and pull out of connector housing.

Installation note: 

Replace defective cable strap.

Connectors are coded against incorrect assembly.

Feed wiring harness out of holders (3).

Disengage seat cover welt from seat frame.

Unclip cable clip (1).

Feed wiring harness (2) out of seat and backrest frames.

Release screw (1).

Tightening torque 72 12 06AZ .

Disengage airbag module in cover pocket (2) from backrest frame.

Only on version without  rear panel:

Remove backrest cover with upholstery from backrest frame.

Only on version with  rear panel:

Remove backrest cover with upholstery from backrest frame.

Pull airbag module downwards out of cover pockets (1).

Installation note: 

Slide airbag module with suspension hooks up to opening in cover pocket.

Cover pocket (1) must not be damaged.

Release all clamps.

Remove seat cover from upholstery.

IMPORTANT: Remove all remnants of clamps from seat cover and upholstery.

Installation note: 

Insert new clamp (2) with special tool 52 0 050 and bend closed.

  1. Upholstery
  2. Clamp
  3. Trim wire in upholstery
  4. Trim wire in seat cover
  5. Backrest cover
