31 21 090 Removing and installing/replacing left or right swivel bearing
Remove front wheel.
Release collar nut (1), press brake pedal to floor for this purpose.
Installation:
Replace collar nut, oil collar nut/wheel bearing contact surface only and tighten down.
No oil permitted on thread of shaft journal or collar nut.
Tightening torque 31 60 2AZ .
Secure collar nut on flattened area (2) of drive shaft by positive peening.
Remove brake disc . See .34 11 220 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING BOTH FRONT BRAKE DISCS .
Remove pulse generator from swivel bearing and expose line up to engine carrier
Remove tie rod end from swivel bearing . See 32 21 231 REPLACING (REMOVING AND INSTALLING) LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Remove wheel guide joint from swivel bearing .
The following operations describe the way in which the output shaft is pressed out of the drive flange.
The following tools are required to press out the output shaft from the drive flange, see graphic for arrangement:

| K2 | Screws M14 x 1.5 |
Press swivel bearing (1) outwards and remove output shaft (2) from wheel bearing.
Disengage brake hose from holder.
Support swivel bearing with workshop jack.
Slacken nut (2).
Pull out screw (1) towards rear and remove swivel bearing.
Installation:
Keep swivel bearing to spring strut connection clean and free from oil and grease.
Note insertion direction of screw.
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque 31 31 3AZ .
Replacement:
- Modify wheel bearing
- Modify brake carrier/guard plate . See 34 11 250 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING FRONT LEFT OR RIGHT BRAKE CONSOLE/BACK PLATE .
The following work steps describe drawing in the output shaft:

| G4 | Adapter M22 x 1.5 to M20 |
Fit adapter with torque wrench to hydraulic unit (see graphic). Set torque wrench to 20 Nm. Draw in output shaft with hydraulic tool until the torque wrench is activated.
Apply a light coating of oil to contact surface of collar nut / wheel bearing, and apply tightening force. - No oil permitted on thread of shaft journal or collar nut. Tighten new collar nut (1). For this purpose, press the brake pedal. Tightening torque 31 60 2AZ . Secure collar nut on flattened area (2) of drive shaft by positive caulking. Installation note: Replace collar nut (1).
After installation:
- Replacement only: Perform wheel/chassis alignment check
