11 31 01 Replacing left camshaft (M62 up to 9/98): Removal

The removal of the camshaft is described separately from the installation. Assembly sequence for removal and installation is different.

Remove all oil lines to left and right cylinder head.

Crank engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until the first cylinder is in TDC position.

Unfasten the accessible three screws on exhaust and inlet camshafts on cylinder bank 1 to 4 approx. 1/2 a turn.

Crank engine once enginewise up to TDC position of first cylinder.

NOTE: When unfastening screw connection on camshaft, brace camshaft on hex head.
CAUTION: Do not damage the cylinder head.
If necessary, machine open-end wrench accordingly.

Unfasten remaining three screws on exhaust and inlet camshafts on cylinder bank 1 to 4 approx. 1/2 a turn.

Remove piston for chain tensioner, refer to 11 31 090 INSTALLING AND REMOVING / REPLACING PISTON FOR CHAIN TENSIONER (M62) .

Remove timing case cover, top left, refer to 11 14 080 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIMING CASE COVER, TOP LEFT (M62 VANOS FROM 9/98) .

Remove sprocket on left inlet camshaft (cylinder bank 5 to 8). Secure chain to prevent it from dropping.

Crank engine counter-enginewise on central screw into 45° before TDC position.

Note markings!

Unfasten sprocket wheel screw connection.

To relieve load on chain, compress chain tensioner.

Lock chain tensioner with special tool 11 3 310.

Lift off both sprockets completely with chain.

Move camshafts on cylinder bank 5 to 8 into installation position.

Rotate exhaust and intake camshafts with special tool 11 3 430.

In insertion position (removal position), recesses in camshafts point approx. 30... 40° downwards from the surface of the cylinder head.

Evenly tighten down bearing covers on camshafts for cylinder bank 5 to 8 in 1/2 turn steps from outside to inside.

Remove bearing covers and place to one side in orderly fashion.

Lift out camshafts.
