Power Steering Gear: Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Replace self-locking nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Tighten bolt for universal joint to steering gear to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Replace sealing rings (D). See Figure. Tighten hollow screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install tie rod. Use washer (1). See Figure. Ensure tapered spigot and bore are both free of grease. Replace self-locking nuts. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under LUBRICATION.
  6. If the steering gear is replaced, adjust the front axle after installation. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
