11 53 000 Removing and installing/replacing coolant thermostat (W10)

WARNING: Danger of scalding! Only perform this task on an engine that has cooled down.

Necessary Preliminary Tasks:

Remove air cleaner housing.
Remove battery container. Refer to 61 21 100 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING BATTERY CONTAINER .
Drain coolant. Refer to 17 00 005 DRAINING AND ADDING COOLANT .

Recycling: Catch and dispose of coolant in a suitable container. Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Detach coolant hoses from thermostat housing (1).

Undo screws (2) on thermostat housing.

Remove thermostat housing.

Remove thermostat and seal from housing.

Installation Note:

Note installation position of bleeder pin (1).

Replace seal and thermostat if necessary.

Tightening torque, refer to 11 12 2AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES- COOPER (1.6L) R50/W10 .

Assemble engine.

Fill cooling system. Refer to 17 00 039 BLEEDING COOLING SYSTEM AND CHECKING FOR WATER LEAKS .

Check cooling system for leaks and correct operation. Refer to 17 00 009 CHECKING COOLING SYSTEM FOR LEAKS (W10) .
