11 31 071 Checking of camshaft timing on right side (S63)
Special tools required:
The timing may be misinterpreted if it is checked without special tool 2 249 162 .
Cylinders 1-4:
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove right CYLINDER HEAD COVER
- Remove BELT PULLEY for air conditioning system
- Remove right CHAIN TENSIONER
Mount special tool 2 249 162 at position of chain tensioner.
Pretension screw (1) to 0.6 Nm .
Pretension special tool 2 249 162 with special tool 00 9 250 or 00 9 460 to 0.6 Nm .
MP = 150° before cylinder no. 1 firing TDC position.
Crank engine at central bolt.
Secure vibration damper with special tools 11 8 570 and 11 9 190 at 150° before cylinder no. 1 firing TDC position .
The situation may arise in some individual cases where this initial setting is not reached and the camshaft can continue to be rotated in the adjustment range of the camshaft adjuster.
In order to avoid incorrect timing adjustment, it is essential to check the locking of the camshaft adjuster and if necessary perform locking by rotating the camshafts.
Check locking of intake camshaft adjuster in initial setting:
Carefully turn against direction of rotation on hexagon head of camshafts (2) with open-end spanner (1).
The intake camshaft adjusters are locked in the initial setting when the camshafts are firmly connected to the adjusters.
Check locking of exhaust camshaft adjusters in initial setting:
Carefully turn against direction of rotation on hexagon head of camshafts (2) with open-end spanner (1).
The exhaust camshaft adjusters are locked in the initial setting when the camshafts are firmly connected to the adjusters.
If the intake or exhaust camshaft adjusters of the camshafts "cannot" be locked as described, the adjuster is faulty and must be replaced.
Installation note:
The ground surface of the camshafts points upwards (see Fig 7).
The position of exhaust camshaft on cylinder 4 is correct when the cam points inwards at an angle.
The position of intake camshaft on cylinder 4 is correct when the cam points towards bottom at an angle.
See Fig 8.
Fit special tool 2 249 137 on intake camshaft and check timing adjustment.
Screws (1) are not required for checking timing.
Place special tool 2 249 140 on the exhaust camshaft and check timing adjustment.
Screws (1) are not required for checking timing.
If necessary, adjust camshaft TIMING on left side.
Remove all special tools.
Assemble engine.
