11 31 070 Checking camshaft timing on left side (N63O1)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 33 other vehicles, including the 2018 BMW M6, 2018 BMW 650i xDrive, 2018 BMW 650i, 2018 BMW 640i xDrive, and 2018 BMW 640i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools required:

IMPORTANT: The timing can only be checked with special tool 2 249 162 .
The timing may be misinterpreted if it is checked without special tool 2 249 162 .

Cylinders 5-8:

Necessary preliminary work:

Mount special tool 2 249 162 at position of chain tensioner.

Pretension screw (1) to 0.6 Nm.

NOTE: Marking (MP = Mounting Position) is important for installing special tool 11 8 570 .

MP = 150° before cylinder no. 1 firing TDC position.

IMPORTANT: When the engine is stopped, the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters are normally locked in their initial setting.
The situation may arise in some individual cases where this initial setting is not reached and the camshaft can continue to be rotated in the adjustment range of the camshaft adjuster.
In order to avoid incorrect timing adjustment, it is essential to check the locking of the camshaft adjuster and if necessary perform locking by rotating the camshafts.

Check locking of intake adjuster in initial setting:

Carefully turn against direction of rotation on hexagon head of camshafts (2) with open-end spanner (1).

The intake adjusters are locked in the initial setting when the camshafts are firmly connected to the adjusters.

Check locking of exhaust camshaft adjusters in initial setting:

Carefully turn against direction of rotation on hexagon head of camshafts (2) with open-end spanner (1).

The exhaust camshaft adjusters are locked in the initial setting when the camshafts are firmly connected to the adjusters.

Installation note:

Fit special tool 2 249 117 when the ground surface of the intake camshaft faces up (see Fig 7).

Installation note:

The ground surface of the exhaust camshaft must face up (see Fig 8).

The position of the exhaust camshaft on cylinder 8 is correct when the cam points downward.

The position of the intake camshaft on cylinder 8 is correct when the cam top points upwards at an angle.

See Fig 9.

IMPORTANT: If the intake or exhaust camshaft adjusters of the camshafts "cannot" be locked as described, the adjuster is faulty and must be replaced.

Fit special tool 2 249 144 on intake camshaft and check timing adjustment.

NOTE: Timing is correctly adjusted when special tool 2 249 144 rests without a gap on cylinder head.

Screws (1) are not required for checking timing.

Place special tool 2 249 159 on the exhaust camshaft and check timing adjustment.

NOTE: Timing is correctly adjusted when special tool 2 249 159 rests without a gap on cylinder head.

Screws (1) are not required for checking timing.

If necessary, adjust camshaft TIMING  on left side.
