11 12 105 Removing and installing left cylinder head (N63O1)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove front axle completely with engine and transmission.
Removed engine on table lift special tool 81 22 2 184 136.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Check TIMING on left.
REMOVE INTAKE AND EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS ON LEFT SIDE .
Remove exhaust manifold on left. See 18 40 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/RENEWING LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD (N63 B40/B44 O 1) .

Release screw (1).

NOTE: Guide rail is loose from cylinder head.

Release bolts (1) at front from cylinder head.

Unfasten hose clamp (1).

Detach coolant hose (2).

Release cylinder head bolts in sequence (10 to 1).

Remove all cylinder head bolts with washer.

Clean sealing surfaces on cylinder head and engine block.

Remove gasket remnants with special tool 11 4 470 .

IMPORTANT: Risk of cracking!
Threaded holes in engine block must be free of dirt and oil.

Check CYLINDER HEAD for leaks.

Check CYLINDER HEAD SEALING FACE for surface evenness.

Oil rising pipe with seal plug (B) from the set of special tools 2 364 711 worn.

Make sure no gasket remnants drop into oil and cooling channels.

Remove coarse residues on sealing surfaces with special tool 11 4 471 from cylinder head and crankcase.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any cutting tools (emery cloth).

Remove fine residues on sealing surfaces with special tool 11 4 472 from cylinder head and crankcase.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any metal-cutting tools.
There must be no coolant, water or engine oil in the pocket holes.
Risk of cracking and corrosion!

Clean all blind holes with suitable auxiliary materials.

Replace CYLINDER HEAD GASKET .

Coat joint between engine block and gear case cover with DREI BOND 1209 2.1 .

NOTE: Illustration shows an N62 engine by way of example.

Check fitting sleeves (1) for damage and correct installation position.

Installation note:

Renew cylinder head gasket (2).

Fit new cylinder head gasket (2).

NOTE: Iluustration N63 of cylinders 1-4.

Installation note:

Fit new cylinder head screws.

Put the cylinder head on.

Do not wash off bolt coating.

Insert cylinder head bolts and initially tighten so that they are free of play.

Apply cylinder head bolts in the sequence 1 - 10 and fit with 30 Nm.

Installation note:

Mark cylinder head bolt (1) with a colored mark to check the angle tightening more effectively.

Tighten down cylinder head bolts in sequence 1 - 10.

Tightening torque 11 12 1AZ .

Install and tighten down bolts (1) between cylinder head and timing case cover.

Tightening torque 11 12 2AZ .

Insert screw (1) of guide rail and tighten down.

Tightening torque 11 31 3AZ .

If necessary, install camshafts. See 11 31 032 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT INTAKE CAMSHAFT (N63O1) and 11 31 036 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT EXHAUST CAMSHAFT (N63O1) .

Install left INLET AND EXHAUST ADJUSTMENT UNITS .

Assemble engine.
