51 31 200 Removing and installing/replacing rear window
Special tools required:
- Notes on window bonding:
- INFORMATION ON VEHICLE PROTECTION
- MATERIALS FOR BONDING WINDOW
- Refer to GENERAL PROCEDURE for dismantling/installation of affixed window glass
The following new parts/consumables are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove left/right HEAD RESTRAINTS
- Remove TRIM PANEL FOR ROOF PILLAR AT REAR on the left/right.
Release cover (1) from clips (2).
Release cover (1) from latch mechanisms (3) towards rear window and remove.
Installation note:
Following parts of cover must not be damaged or missing.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.
Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Unfasten cable strap (2).
Secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.
Slacken nut (1).
Unfasten cable strap (2).
Secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.
Push wire from ROLL OUT 2000 at line (1) through adhesive bead.
Position of hoisting winches:
- Hoisting winch with double coil (1) is positioned horizontally at top right.
- Suction cup (2) of a hoisting winch is positioned at top left as a deflection point.
Cut out rear window with ROLL OUT 2000 .
Secure tailgate (1) in half-opened position with tensioning strap (2).
Tape off area (A) on the left/right with yellow plastic adhesive tape.
Before preparing the adhesive area, position the rear window as a trial.
Overview of rear window bonding:

| h [mm] = Height adhesive bead | 12 ±1 |
x = approx. 350 mm (distance of bead joint (1) to rear window edge)
Apply adhesive bead a distance (a) from rubber frame (2).
Installation note:
Carefully working on rear window with SIPHON :
- Open rear lid approx. 30 cm and secure with suitable object.
- Insert first at bottom
- Align sides evenly
- Center rear window to distances (A) and (B)
- secure in this position with yellow plastic adhesive tapes
A = 5.9±1 mm
B= 4.5±1 mm
Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise:
Rear window (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.
Position special tool 51 0 010 in center of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of rear window (1).
A = 3.4 ± 1 mm
X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm
