25 11 000 Removing and installing gearshift lever

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove BUTTON for gearshift lever.
Remove propeller shaft. See 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT (INSERTED - FLEXIBLE DISC AT REAR) or 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT (CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINT) .

Undo retaining clip (1).

Remove gearshift rod (2).

Installation note:

Grease gearshift rod pin.

IMPORTANT: Retaining clip must interlock captively with retaining web (1) behind gearshift rod pin.

Unlock bearing journal (1) in direction of arrow and remove.

Installation note:

Grease bearing journal.

Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids. See GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM -- OPERATING FLUIDS .

Lever support bearing (1) out of bracket.

Feed U-type bellows (2) with gearshift arm (1) and gearshift lever (3) carefully out of body aperture toward the top.

IMPORTANT: The PVC guide inserted in the U-type bellows for the body aperture breaks easily during removal and installation.

Release U-type bellows bead (1) from gearshift arm up.

Press retaining lugs (2) of gearshift lever mount and release gearshift lever (3) from gearshift arm.

Installation note:

Pull U-type bellows bead from below completely over gearshift arm cup.

Installation note:

Grease gearshift lever ball. See GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM -- OPERATING FLUIDS .

Fit mount on gearshift arm cup.

Align retaining lugs of mount to recesses in cup (crossways to direction of travel).

Press gearshift arm with mount downwards until mount audibly engages (if necessary, use pressing in tool).

Installation note:

Press U-type bellows lips (1) into the body aperture and U-type bellows lips (2) into the sound insulation.

Make sure that the arrow on the U-type bellows is seated in direction of travel.
