23 00 019 Removing and installing transmission (GS6-37BZ) 4WD N51/N52/N52K/N53
After completion of work, check TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL .
Use only the approved TRANSMISSION OIL .
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the manual transmission.
No steel screws/bolts may be used due to the threat of electrochemical corrosion.
A magnesium crankcase requires aluminium screws/bolts exclusively.
Aluminium screws/bolts must be replaced each time they are released.
Aluminium screws/bolts are permitted with and without color coding (blue).
For reliable identification:
Aluminium screws/bolts are not magnetic.
Jointing torque and angle of rotation must be observed without fail (risk of damage).
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect BATTERY EARTH LEAD
- Remove underbody protection and bracket at front and rear
- Remove REINFORCEMENT PLATE
Important installation notes are described in this job item
- Remove complete EXHAUST SYSTEM
- Remove center silencer (N53 only)
Remove heat shields (1) and (2).
Unplug connector (1) from oil level sensor.
Disconnect connector (1).
Unfasten screws (2).
Remove cover plate (3). Unscrew holder (4).
Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ .
Installation note:
Release aluminium screw on right next to cable retaining plate with special tool 00 9 010 .
Installation note:
Aluminium screws must be replaced.
Detach connector (1) from reversing light switch.
Release cable from brackets.
Disconnect plugs (1) and (2) from servomotor.
Release screws.
Tightening torque 26 11 9AZ.
Remove front propeller shaft at output flange of transfer box and tie to one side.
Installation note:
Replace screws.
- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center mount.
- Bending the propeller shaft by an excessive angle can cause premature damage to the joint/propeller shaft!
- Tie up propeller shaft to underbody.
- Support engine with lifter when removing transmission.
Supporting transmission:
Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050 and 00 2 030 .
Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).
Tasks are described in TRANSMISSION BRACKET .
After completion of work, check transmission fluid level.
Release screws.
Remove transmission cross member.
Tightening torque 27 00 10AZ .
Lift off retainer (1).
Detach gearshift rod (2).
Installation note:
Grease gearshift rod.
Grease, refer to OPERATING FLUIDS .
Make sure shims (3) are in correct position.
Unlock bearing journal (1) in direction of arrow and remove.
Lift out gearshift arm.
Installation note:
Grease bearing journals (1).
Grease, refer to OPERATING FLUIDS .
Release nuts and remove clutch slave cylinder.
Tightening torque 21 52 5AZ .
Release screws.
Installation note:
Observe screw fastening sequence without fail.
Tightening torque, steel screws: 23 00 1AZ .
Aluminium screws/bolts must be replaced.
Tightening torque and angle of rotation for aluminium screws/bolts: 23 00 2AZ .
Installation note:
Secure special angle-of-rotation tool 00 9 120 with magnet 00 9 130 to floor panel.
Screw down aluminium screws/bolts according to angle of rotation.
Angle of rotation: 23 00 2AZ .
Installation note:
Check that fitting sleeves are correctly fitted.
Replace damaged fitting sleeves.
Ensure correct position of cover plate.
Installation note:
Check lubrication of transmission drive shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, clean transmission input shaft and replace CLUTCH DISC .
Check clutch disc for friction rust in gearing and REPLACE if necessary.
Mechanically remove existing grease and lining abrasion from gearings of clutch disc (with a cloth).
Installation note:
Greasing specification:
- Remove and clean RELEASE BEARING AND RELEASE LEVER .
- Push on grease scraper ring 21 2 220 until limit position.
- Grease splines (1) of input shaft with a brush. Refer to OPERATING FLUIDS .
- Detach grease scraper ring.
