16 00 005 Draining and filling fuel tank

CAUTION: The electric fuel pump must not operate without fuel! After servicing before the first engine start-up, fill the fuel tank via fuel filling line with at least 5 l fuel.
Do not damage non-return valves when pulling out suction hose.
Observe according country safety legislation and regulations!
Ensure adequate ventilation in the place of work!
Connect the exhaust and extraction systems to the exhaust tailpipe.

Slide extraction hose of suction extractor unit, refer to BMW Service Workshop Equipment Planning documentation, into filler pipe, turn a little if necessary.

Insertion length: 

110 cm

Draw out fuel with suction unit (refer to BMW Workshop Equipment Planning documentation) as far as possible.

Drawing off residual fuel quantity: 

Draw off residual fuel quantity through installation openings.

Monitor drop in fuel level with a multimeter.

NOTE: Fuel level drops - resistance less than 150ohm.

Remove screw cap with rubber seal. Refer to 16 12 001 Removing and installing/replacing fuel level sensor for fuel gauge  .

Fuel filling: 

Slide extraction hose of suction extractor unit, refer to BMW Service Workshop Equipment Planning documentation, approx. 40 cm into filler pipe.

Fill fuel from suction extractor unit.
