51 12 157 Replacing rear bumper trim (M6)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2010 BMW M6, 2010 BMW 650i, 2009 BMW M6, 2009 BMW 650i, and 2008 BMW M6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove rear bumper trim (M6) .
- Remove lock part for bumper .
- Remove both rear lights in bumper. See 63 21 183 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT REAR LIGHT .
- Remove both license plate lights. See 63 26 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT NUMBER/LICENSE PLATE LIGHT
- Remove all ultrasonic transducers. See 66 20 540 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING A REAR ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER (PARK DISTANCE CONTROL)
Remove cover cap (1) for tow lug. Remove wiring harness (2) for ultrasonic transducers.
Lay bumper trim (1) down on a cushioned, level surface. Attach license plate carrier (2) to bumper trim (1).
IMPORTANT:
Make sure license plate carrier (2) is correctly seated on bumper trim (1). Guide (3) must be correctly seated in bumper trim (1).
NOTE:
The license plate carrier is secured with a commercially available hot-cutting tool (1) with replaceable blade (2).
WARNING:
Observe the following when handling the hot-cutting tool (1):
- Danger of burning.
- Do not inhale the fumes that are generated, draw fumes off by extraction if necessary.
- Make sure the room is well ventilated.
- For further safety information, refer to operating instructions.
NOTE:
Before welding each individual lug (2), check seating of license plate carrier (4) on bumper trim (1) and if necessary realign.
Press license plate carrier (4) firmly onto bumper trim (1) and weld lugs (2) with hot-cutting tool (3).

NOTE:
Ensure correct welding in order to guarantee secure seating of the license plate carrier.
