31 60 004 Removing and installing/replacing right output shaft

IMPORTANT: Manual gearbox only:  After each removal of the output shaft, the radial shaft seal in the transmission must be replaced. See 23 11 201 REPLACING RADIAL SHAFT SEAL ON LEFT OF DIFFERENTIAL (GS6-53BG/DG/55BG)

Remove FRONT WHEEL .

Manual gearbox only: Drain and catch transmission oil. See 00 11 229 OIL CHANGE IN MANUAL GEARBOX .

IMPORTANT: Expand anti-twist lock sufficiently to avoid damaging thread when releasing collar nut.

Unfasten collar nut (1). For this purpose, press the brake pedal.

Installation note:  Replace collar nut.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damaging the anti-roll bar link.

Use special tools (see BMW Workshop Catalogue). 

The following operations describe the way in which the output shaft is pressed out of the drive flange: 

The following tools are required to press out the output shaft from the drive flange:

Necessary components: 

1 Hydraulic unit
E3 Washer M24
F3 Spindle M24 (length 270 mm)
B2 Adapter
K2 Screws M14 x 1.5

Secure output shaft against falling out.

Press out output shaft with hydraulic unit.

Press swivel bearing (1) outwards.

Pull out output shaft (2).

Unfasten screws (2).

Tightening torque: 38 Nm

IMPORTANT: The radial shaft seal must be replaced in the transmission each time the output shaft (1) is removed!

Lever output shaft (1) out of transmission and remove.

IMPORTANT: Different types of output shafts fitted!
Do not mix up snap rings.

- Manual transmission

- Automatic transmission

Installation note: 

Replace circlip.

Installation note: 

Insert assembly guard (1) into shaft seal.

Assembly guard (1) is provided with new shaft seal for output shaft.

Make sure the tool fits over the shaft seal lip so that the sealing ring is not damaged when the output shaft is inserted.

Installation note: 

With automatic transmission only: Replace O-ring (1).

Installation note: 

Insert output shaft (1) into gearbox.

Manual gearbox only: Before sealing surface is pushed into radial shaft seal, remove assembly guard (2) by pulling on handle.

Before sealing surface is pushed into shaft seal, remove assembly guard (2) by pulling on handle.

Slide output shaft into gearbox up to stop.

The output shaft must snap audibly into place. Check secure seating by levering.

The following work steps describe drawing in the output shaft: 

The following tools are required to press out the output shaft from the drive flange.

Necessary components: 

1 Hydraulic unit
E3 Holding sleeve M24
D1 Washer
F2 Spindle M24 / M20 (length 335 mm)
G4 Adapter M22 x 1.5 to M20

Draw in output shaft with hydraulic unit.

Tighten new collar nut (1).

Tightening torque: 182 Nm

Installation note: 

Replace collar nut, oil collar nut/wheel bearing contact surface only and tighten down.

No oil permitted on thread of shaft journal or collar nut.

Secure collar nut on flattened area (2) of output shaft by positive caulking.
